Maya Hernandez, 20, is facing charges of involuntary manslaughter and child cruelty

A one-year-old is dead after being left in a hot car for hours while his mother underwent a cosmetic procedure, police said.

Maya Hernandez, 20, is facing charges of involuntary manslaughter and child cruelty after allegedly leaving her two sons, Amillio Gutierrez, 1, and his two-year-old brother, locked inside a parked car as temperatures soared to 101 degrees in Bakersfield, California on June 29.

People should not be allowed to have kids before 28. I mean there are places that don’t allow you to drink before 21 (not that I support it) but yet somehow they think you have sufficient maturity to take care of a baby? Nah…

The car was running with the air conditioner on. It automatically turns itself off after one hour in park.

I own the same model of car, and it tells you the car will shut off after an hour. As soon as you open the door, you get a big “car will automatically shut off in one hour” warning and cabin chime. It even pings your phone if you have the app installed.

That’s all good. Still feels like insane behavior for the car to have.

I think this is the classic case of trying to second guess the operator of the vehicle.

Some people were leaving their cars on in their garages accidentally, and having the engine start at some point later. This leads to leaking combustion products into the garage and home.

To fix that, they add an auto shut off that leads to cars unexpectedly turning off.

        Hard nut to crack.

While I understand the thought process behind this feature where the car shuts itself off after idling for “too long” the possibly deadly consequences make me question whether it should exist.

(To be clear, what she did was still incredibly stupid whether the feature existed or not and whether she knew about it or not)

You’re right. Nobody reads a car’s manual cover-to-cover. Even if there was a way to disable this feature, she probably wouldn’t have known about it.

Sure, you’ve read the manual of every rental car you’ve ever used. K, buddy.

Piss off dude. 99% of the time cars are all the fucken same it only gets problematic when some dipshit changes something for no reason that’s been the same since the 1970s.

True. Cars consoles (knowingly here in the US) are non-standard in their layouts. I was one day surprised while riding as passenger in my sister’s new 2023 car that she didn’t know how to turn on the headlights. The light “switch” was a menu button, to go inside a menu, and a mode needed to be selected. That was one scary day.

There should not be deadly consequences because you shouldn’t be leaving any person or other animal unattended in a car for that long.

I have a friend who accidentally killed his much-loved dog because he’d only intended to be gone for five minutes. He ended up getting distracted and was away from the car for over an hour. By then, the dog was dead. That was years ago, but it’ll always be heartbreaking.

The boys’ grandmother, Katie Martinez, is heartbroken.

“They were strapped in their car seats. They couldn’t even get up to save themselves,” she told ABC7. “She literally locked them in their car seats and shut their doors.”

The grandmother will never forgive her (nor should she).

Natural selection still exists and nothing stopping stupid people from creating life. In fact it’s encouraged.

This is the first “mugshot” I’ve seen of the perp.

She killed one of her kids (and would have killed a second) to get a friggin’ anus on her face.

I hope a decent caregiver can be found for the surviving kid. That is, if he’s not brain-damaged from the heat and doesn’t have to be institutionalized for the rest of his life.
