I have some questions about advice on what I should do and how to go about doing it. But reading the rules of this community (and asklemmy), it isn’t clear to me that such questions are in the spirit of the community, but I’m unsure. Is this an appropriate place to ask such questions? And if not, can you point me to more appropriate communities? (It’s not mental, medical, or professional advice)
Not necessarily looking for an answer in this thread, but I suppose just to provide a sample question to better consider what I mean:
- I am thinking about possibly moving to another country. What are things I should consider to decide if I should do so? What actions do I need to take to plan and make such a move? What are some resources that could make those move actions easier or even any companies that can do some of that work for me?
If you cannot find a dedicated community for the topic feel free to ask here. As you already noted we advise against asking for medical advice but everything else is OK.
IMO this community is more about questions that are obvious to some but not others, hence why some might think they are stupid questions. This example question is something that isn’t common sense for the majority, so yeah imo it’s the wrong community to ask in.
It’s kind of like that comic and being today’s lucky 10,000
Visa issues/complications are the main thing, like someone else mentioned. Also consider whether language will be an issue. If you’re an American, moving to the UK is likely very different from moving to rural Djibouti. Consider what you will do for work and whether that’s actually feasible in the country you’re thinking of. Your basic goals are ensuring you can gain some form of legal status, hold down some form of employment to support yourself (often requiring said legal status, unless you’re remote, etc…), and actually survive wherever you move/not die of culture shock/not be consumed by homesickness, etc…
Look at actual home listings/job listings. Talk to people from the country you’re looking at. Visit, if possible. The fewer things you have tying you down (relationships, kids, pets, etc…) the easier it is. Also consider creative routes, such as enrolling in some university program or something similar that gets your foot in the door.
Disclaimer: I am not a mod, this is just my interpretation of the spirit of the community.
I’d say sure, go for it. As long as it can be thought of as a stupid question and/or with a simple answer outside of this board. If not, consider AskLemmy.
I have lots of experience with this but to keep it brief for now I would start with checking the visa requirements of the destination country. I have a friend who was going to move and after he arrived learned that he cannot apply for a work visa while in the country.
That question is fine here in my opinion.
Do you know any subs good for asking the kinds of questions OP wants to ask?
