I could have a thousands friends that joined the military, but it helps immensely that we haven’t been annexing foreign countries with the express purpose of annexing it and/or displacing their population since 1949, and that was WAY before any of my friends were born.

I am going to speculate here.
Guy probably had a fight with wife when drunk. Her point was that he always spends money on alcohol and is an alcoholic ass. They probably live on poverty line or below, as many <1mil city folk do. He thought “fuck it! Gonna get some dough, get away from wife for a while and come home a hero”. He signed up while drunk. Died on the frontlines.
There are documented cases when wives were agitating husbands to go to war with secret intention that they die there. Widows would receive reimbursement and remarry to someone else hopefully better.
This is not even the worst case. Worst ones imo are when inmates signing up and successfully coming back home with their crimes written off. These cases never end good.
