    No build new features like a whirlpool first, we havn’t gotten the time or the manpower to deal with this concern of yours the client is only paying us to add the whirlpool.

    Just needs a couple of steel shelf brackets like this. That should do it. Steel is really strong, you might think you could bend these with your hands, but you couldn’t.

      Probably just from natural warping, it doesn’t look like those are actually bearing any weight. That porch seems to be properly cantilevered into the structure of the house and aren’t just slapped on with some joist hangers.

      I’m guessing the 2x4 are just there for shits and giggles.

        Yeah, last I saw this, it was revealed that it was actually properly cantilevered and the homeowner thought it would be funny to shove some thin boards underneath as a joke.

      No leger board is a good thing in this case, probably means it’s built as a cantilever setup like this

      And the tiny supports probably aren’t needed at all and they just made a funny photo.

      Edit: i have no idea if that far of a span is appropriate for that type of cantilever.

        While I’m confident this is what is shown in OP’s pic, I’d still want support posts under a girder at the edge. Over-build it the first time and be done with it.

        That would explain the use of 2x12 (2x10 maybe?) lumber and how it kinda disappears into the house past the siding. Still, I wouldn’t want that lumber exposed to the elements like that - it’s like asking for moisture to penetrate the structure.

    If I understand wood and math correctly then 2 x 2 equals 4. So that is 4 inches of solid wood for support. You should be okay. /s

    I suggest an empirical approach. Try having ten people jump up and down simultaneously on the balcony. That will quickly determine, if any action is required.

    Illustration aside… this would just be considered a weeks worth of bug clean up by modern code standards.

    Aka how divorced code is from reality.

    Maybe it gets fixed with a hackathon!
