Brb, gonna sample some sci-fi
Japanese: Gundam, obviously
American: gotta be Stranger in a Strange Land by Robert A Heinlein
French: idk. Flash Gordon, Attack of the 50’ Woman, and Barberella are what come to mind, but those are American films
British: Time Machine by HG Wells of course
Valerian and Laureline seems to fit
I need to watch more French Sci-Fi

just read some Metal Hurlant and Pilote - it is way wilder than the movies.
At the same time, go watch Heavy Metal. The soundtrack alone is well worth it.
and Metal Hurlant Chronicles if you can find it not in potato quality
British sci-fi is more likely one of these:
- Dysfunctional but mysterious magical traveler and his witless sidekicks stumble through space and time having campy adventures.
- Dysfunctional band of renegades rush through space having campy adventures fighting a heartless evil empire with witty retorts.
- Dysfunctional group of misfits stumble through space skewering each other with witty retorts and having campy adventures while trying to find their way home.
There’s definitely a pattern there.
all three of that is just Doctor Who,
don’t forget that Black Mirror started british
I think the second one is Blake’s 7.
Third is Red Dwarf
i’ll bet both of ya that Doctor Who has at least 3 episodes that fit each of those exact descriptions
All of you are correct! 😂
more like thirty three. you underestimate the variety of 3, 4, 5 Doctors
or Red Dwarf
British sci-fi is more like:
“Oh freddled gruntbuggly,Thy micturations are to me as plurdled gabbleblotchits”
Edit: the down votes are disturbing. Do people hate HHGTG or do they not know it? Both are horrible options.
…on a lurgid bee. Groop! I implore thee, my foonting turlingdromes…
As someone who reads scifi like a chain smoker in a tobacco warehouse, this reads as somewhat antiquated. Niven and Heinlein and such back in the day, definitely in the American camp on how they wrote women and relationships, not seeing much of that lately though. Heavy lean on military scifi instead. Most of it narrated by RC Bray.
Silo series was American. Though that felt like the smart man’s Fallout as a writing prompt. Chuck Wendig, American. Maybe we all just have apocalypse on the brain the last decade.
Not sure the space romance thing is limited to one country’s culture. God save us all from young adult fiction of any kind, because this is the main plot.
The real issue in scifi rn is the multiverse popping up like the vampire trend back in the Sookie Stackhouse days. Every other description of newly “printed” scifi I’ve read in my book searches this year: multiverse. Is everyone just out of ideas?
I liked it better when it felt like the scifi market was trying to find the next expanse.
multiverse. Is everyone just out of ideas?
Everyone wants to leave this reality
Either that or it’s what AI is doing in their infiltration of the book market.
I hate multiverse stories. Give me oppressive time loops instead.
Australian Sci-Fi: The rest of the world is forced to live in a desert wasteland full of criminals the way we do every day, and they struggle to adapt.
Real Australian Sci-fi: What if there was a woman named Muriel who loved Abba and went on vacation?
So Mad Max (the original)
And we bring back the Australian car manufacturing sector!
And we have telepathic dogs who teach us that women are bad
What
It’s not Australian, but that sounds like A Boy and His Dog.
British Sci-fi: Threads
There’s also When the Wind Blows, if you want to be depressed but also want an absolute banger of a soundtrack.
Also the inspiration for a banging Iron Maiden track.
Best on that album for sure
When the Wind Blows is borderline optimistic compared to Watership Down.
And the American version was The Day After (1983)
Entirely different movies with the same premise. The Day After messed me up as a kid. But Threads haunts me as an adult.
The Day After gets way more fucked up when you watch the roundtable discussion that took place after its premiere. Now that’s some parallel reality mental prolapse.
oh wow, Carl Sagan and henry kissinger on that panel for the discussion, with Ted Koppel mediating 🫥 god, remember when news was interesting and not 24/7 doom-rage mind rot?
there was a month and half period when ukrainian news broadcasted wall-to-wall gorefest. and then Bucha was liberated and it wasn’t shits and giggles anymore.
Oooh, where’s that at? I’d love to watch it
its on youtube. and it is quite fucked up. with folks like that end of the world is probably the best case scenario.
as an addon - there was also BBC After Dark episode about Chornobyl which was “white people feeling bad about famine in Africa” level of white savior bullshit - their arrogance is actively repulsive.
it’s technically a docudrama. and then it gets bored.
Canadian/German sci-fi: All of the above.
There’s actually a lot of decent sci Fi with Canadian creators / writers / cast / filming location
The main rule is that it will be set anywhere but Canada
The cube is amazing
Russian sci-fi: every single person in the future is white.
Tbf, that’s pretty close to how most of Russia already is.
To be equally fair, though, that’s probably mostly because it’s a very racist country with an ethnonationalist government.
American sci-fi: America is technologically, morally, physically, and intellectually superior. And the answer to all ills is more science.
Make it so, number one.
British one sounds realistic
The British one is just British Sci.
Vander Meer’s Big Book of Sience Fiction has countless stories that run at odds to the sentiment in this post.
That last one might not be sci-fi for long
Judge Dredd, Threads, Lifeforce(Kind of) certainly supports the UK sci fi Idea. French scifi is a little more like EVERYONE ,good and Bad is turned on at all times. American sci fi is spot in,i can’t think of any counter evidence.
EVERYONE ,good and Bad is turned on at all times
So what you’re saying is that French sci-fi is the most realistic of all fiction? 🤔
Heavy Metal, fifth element even Alien 4 spring to mind.
Hey! There are also Japanese sci-fi which just validate the author’s fetishes. There’s even two I know where that fetish is specifically polygamy.
