Satellite internet functionality via Starshield — the military version of the SpaceX service — was being at least partially restored Thursday morning, according to a source in the Ukrainian Defense Ministry.

Ukraine has resumed strikes on Russian oil refineries after President Volodymyr Zelenskyy angrily accused the United States of betraying Kyiv with a “dangerous” withdrawal of support critical to its defense against Russia.

Ukraine held off on attacks for three days after Donald Trump’s unilateral “energy ceasefire” announcement, but accused Russia of repeatedly attacking its power grid. Zelenskyy voiced mounting frustration over the Kremlin’s failure to abide by the truce, and what he sees as U.S. attempts to pressure Kyiv after gaps in intelligence sharing on Russian attacks and restrictions on the Starlink internet service.

Satellite internet functionality via Starshield — the military version of the SpaceX service — was being at least partially restored Thursday, according to a source in the Ukrainian Defense Ministry, who spoke on the condition of anonymity due to the sensitivity of the topic.

In an interview with the Financial Times, published Thursday, Zelenskyy indicated his patience had already been exhausted.

Understand one very important thing that’s happening here: stopping Russia at this point in time benefits the entire planet.

They’ve been going around attacking countries, killing people, and slaughtering civilians for decades with absolutely no meaningful pushback from anyone.

Ukraine is simply able to push back.

Of course, the problem is that stopping Russia doesn’t benefit a very small group of people, and that’s evident by Trump’s behavior. This very small group of people is willing to do literally anything and everything to protect what they have, purely for their own selfish purposes and nothing more.

It’s obvious that Zelensky is no longer playing ball with this nonsense of the 1% doing whatever the hell they want. Good for him. It’s time to put these people in their place and take their money away from them.

Sure, I’m not even going to disagree with you, except for the fact that we weren’t talking about the US in this post.

As a matter of fact, I was admonishing the US and its decision to betray the Ukrainians.

I will say this, however: regardless of how you feel about the US and your animosity toward it, Ukraine has been able to defend itself against Russia, in large part, because of the support it received from the United States.

Russia is a threat not just to the US, but to the rest of the world as well.

And as bad as the US really is, you’ll get no argument from me on that point, but we still have the capacity to do the right thing, at least to some degree. Keep in mind that this current administration is, in my opinion, the worst I’ve ever seen in my lifetime, and I’ve lived through quite a few presidents.

Conservatism is and always has been an attempt to return to a form of feudalism, with the rich being the new nobility and everyone else being powerless to resist. In that regard, Russia with its oligarchs is about as conservative as it comes.

No. Conservatism can be that and can be skepticism to idealism in all forms.

The Russian example would be the popular belief of some people that presidential power should be made stronger in the 90s, and then of some other people that everything western is just better from the root and larping is enough, and then of another group of people that they can take modern (by year 2012) Russia’s common idea of “respectable” and “cool” and make it compatible with honesty and justice and their own survival.

The American example would be - well, I think Fox News is good enough, what they started with was (of what I’ve read) the typical American idea of “alternative” and “anti-establishment”, which is good in itself, just believing that there’s a side offering that or that there’s a way to move the world in that direction radically, - these are dangerous idiocies.

The “youthly liberal modern” idea of cool of 2010s in the social media, that I’ve recently remembered, is too a good example. When virtually all of the crowd was uncritically accepting that people at whom corporate policies point and say “they are homophobes, extremists and what’s the worst of all - uncool”, are really that.

One meaning of the word “conservatism” is being skeptical of such things. One can be conservative-left. It’s just that people don’t like nuance.

It doesn’t matter what you think conservatism is, it only matters what your masters think it is. And they follow the teachings of Edmund Burke, that money means control and that control is everything.

As long as you keep supporting monsters, they’ll keep selling you lies.

Because conservatism is the push for a new feudalism, and the serfs have no say in it beyond blindly supporting the rich.

There’s obviously nothing anti establishment and counter cultural about fox news. These are demagogues with budgets of millions of USD and with a large viewership.

How they stylize their reactionary bs is almost meaningless. It’s surface level.

We’re not talking about words, we’re talking about political ideology. A communist is a communist, a liberal is a liberal, a fascist is a fascist, these ideologies aren’t context dependent. There are different kinds of communists and liberals and fascists etc etc but they’re all recognizably part of the same ideological family with a clear historical tradition, no matter the time period or country.

Conservatives can be so radically different in different contexts that it’s not really useful as a descriptor. It’s like saying someone is extreme or moderate or revolutionary or something, its so context dependent that it tells you practically nothing without the context.

Wtf is with this shit expecting Ukraine to treat Russia with kid gloves? They were invaded. As far as I’m concerned they could glass Moscow and I wouldn’t give a shit. If we want Russia to be able to deliver oil we should be pressuring them to GTFO of Ukraine so Ukraine has no reason to defend themselves.

Why even entertain any other resolution?

Many people were full into the idea of the USSR, and still are angry that it dissolved. They see Russia as a legitimate successor and lick up their narrative.

And then there are people who don’t like Russia or war, but who are also skeptical about their own leadership in the US and NATO states. Both siders.

The Russian narrative has a good chance with these as well.

And then there’s young people who have not experienced much history themselves and are in need of orientation.

Strategically, glassing a city wouldn’t solve anything. That just makes the people who are left want to fight harder.

Infrastructure and decapitation strikes are more effective at getting populations to stop fighting, especially when that infrastructure includes the propaganda machine.

I want Russians and Ukranians both to stop dying.

If pooty would direct himself to the nearest open highrise window, I’m sure he would inadvertently save countless lives, since simply stopping doesn’t seem to be on the table.

Yes, but surgical strikes that leave the population alive are more effective.

Bomb the people into submission was a plan cooked up after the first world war, and was pretty stupid then as well.

The firebombing of Germany, Japan, the UK, etc. didn’t make the population less willing to fight, quite the opposite, but the defeat of a countries military, did in fact make the populations surrender.

Populations will put up with a lot when under constant attack, when their loved ones are dying in the street, but when they’re merely inconvenienced, and then their team loses, well, that breaks moral.

Also, decapitation works wonders, take out the leaders who are pushing for more war, and suddenly there’s no push for more war.

Both Hiroshima and Nagasaki were important strategic targets. Hiroshima was a heavily industrialized factory city as well as a major logistics and supply hub. Nagasaki was…an industrialized city producing war materials with a major port and was a major shipping hub.

Both bombs served specific strategic purposes in destroying the Japanese war effort. It wasn’t just “let go blow up some japs lol”.

    resumes strikes

Did they actually stop? Trump made some noise about a pause, but I haven’t seen any evidence of a break in the fighting.

Zelenskyy voiced mounting frustration over the Kremlin’s failure to abide by the truce

What truce? Nobody in Ukraine or Russia negotiated a truce. Russian diplomats simply told Trump that they couldn’t ship gas until Ukraine backed down. And then Trump threw a hissy fit at his Ukrainian counterparts, because that’s how Trump engages with an “ally” diplomatically.

Satellite internet functionality via Starshield — the military version of the SpaceX service — was being at least partially restored Thursday, according to a source in the Ukrainian Defense Ministry, who spoke on the condition of anonymity due to the sensitivity of the topic.

It still boggles my mind that anyone in Ukraine can consider StarLink a reliable partner in this conflict. I have to wonder how many dead Ukrainians are attributable to sudden and unannounced suspensions of service by Elon Musk’s premier global telecom.

I am also surprised by that wording. I assume Zelenskyy sinply employs the same “technique” as Trump: just matter-of-factly state something to fit the narrative for your goals and blame everyone else for being incompetent dumbfucks or liars.

In the end it’s all a bit “he said she said” anyway.

Edit: hey hey, why the downvotes? Please elaborate. Last headline I read was that Zelenskyy didn’t know about any “deal”. Trump talked to Putin and then announced a ceasefire between Ukraine and Russia.

Now Zelenskyy says Russia broke the cease fire. That sounds to me more like just spinning Trumps onesided narrative further to have a public reason for continuing hurting Russia (which is fine by me).

I was just trying to point out that the narrative is surprising/weird.

Most of the “liberal media” now seems to have that stance, pretending that butthurt rightwing claims of how mean the “liberal media” was to donnie back in 2016 over his Russian ties is a legit grievance of how the media went overboard, or “fell for” something, etc.?

Mostly because the Steele dossier was debunked if I recall correctly. His financial ties to a bunch of Russian oligarchs is definitely real though

The Steele dossier was a collection of raw intelligence reports. Minor details were proven wrong, such as Trump spending the night in a hotel but not in the presidential suite like the report claimed. Otherwise, multiple people claimed they could prove they hadn’t done what was claimed but failed to do so or were later proved to have indeed done the things.

Nearly all of the claims have been proven broadly true by subsequent investigations.

It linked multiple members of his campaign to elements in and around the Russian government. Communication records later proved that contact has indeed taken place.

It claimed Russians had dirt on Trump from a pageant he hosted there. While no blackmail material has come out, one of the Russian contacts the campaign communicated with told them he had buried some for them.

The dossier claimed a Romanian hacking group operating at the direction of the Russian government was behind the Clinton leaks. It was later proven that it had been done by a Russian group pretending to be Romanian.

It was claimed that WikiLeaks was directly coordinating with both the Trump campaign and Russia to inflict maximum damage on Clinton and steer people toward Trump. Emails later came out that proved this.

These are just a handful of the verified claims.

This was my understanding as well. I have no idea why the narrative that it was “debunked” is one that seems to prevalent now.

Relying on the so-called “liberal media” for certain details, most especially the Russian-donnie collusion, can make one feel like they are taking crazy pills.

It gets even worse if one still takes someone like Taibbi into account, too. JFC, what happened to him, anyway? Did Russia get something on him while he was staying there?

            Two main issues:

            1. The Mueller report substantiated many pieces of Steele’s dossier, but the false summary the Attorney General released first claimed the opposite. This muddied reporting at the point where it should have been clear whether claims were true or false.
            2. The story basically ended with the Mueller report. Since then, it only appears in headlines when Trump goes on a rant about the “Russia Hoax.” That means there are headlines quoting him every couple months saying that it was false. The articles say he’s lying, but the repeated headlines are what people see and remember.
