Of evil spirits
The toilet demon cult 🤣😂.
I’m not going to say latin is boring, but most high school kids really don’t give a fuck about it. Sounds like this teacher is absolutely engaging the class and I appreciate the heck out of that.
I had 3 different Latin teachers. Only one of them was even close to be interested in making his classes more engaging
But the guy was also a massive nerd who apparently went to conventions/meetups where only Latin was allowed to be spoken. And I always suspected he was old enough to have been alive when it was the lingua franca
Most teachers just went through the books, told us about some grammar rules and gave us a page of text to translate as homework
I had a fucking rad Latin teacher. Everything was engaging, stories about words and history and crazy facts. She showed Life of Brian solely for the Romanes eunt domus scene and stood in front of the TV for the full frontal nudity. It was the 90s man.
We had a guy named Scott in our class when our textbook was focusing on the Romans in the British isles, so we called him Caldonii to tease her because she insisted that he was a singular Scott and not a plural.
She took us to high school Latin competitions and we placed pretty well for the state.
I think you mean the Romani ite domum scene
Compared to a lot of other stuff that happened at school, learning Latin was fun. Especially because for a while we had the best teacher I ever had in that subject.
I took latin in high school and was devastated when my teacher retired and I didn’t get a second year
Doctor Jan Itor
I can actually fully confirm the subjugation of esse is perfect for a chant, as my school mates and I used to chant exactly that and it’s the only reason why I still remember it: sum, es, est, sumus, estis, sunt!
Nerd time, sorry.
Does Latin have two different types of “to be” like Portuguese, Spanish (and maybe Italian?). French collapsed them into one, pretty similar to your Latin above.
Suis, es, est, sommes, êtes, sont!
But I’m wondering why the other Latin languages have different versions of be. When I started learning Portuguese, I realised why être had such a weird conjugation. It looked like a mashup of ser and estar. Anyway, I’m too lazy to look it up, so I will continue to wonder.Nerd moment out.
I took Latin in high school. This was exactly the type of crowd it attracted back then as well.
Keep doing what you’re doing
This is how we spawn toilet demons. They’re not just mean, they smell awful.
To be fair, sum, esse, fui is a bitch.
4 years of Latin and I still had to think through it.
Technically is Moaning Myrtle a toilet demon?
Yes.
The fact that she was spawned by a hateful pile of shit is just bonus comedy.
There’s no way I’m taking on a toilet demon, no matter how many rolls of TP I’ve got.
I imagine it’d be like the demon in Dogma. Ewwie.
The modern iteration of a toilet demon would be a collaboration between Samsung and Meta: the smart toilet.
Stop it! You’re scaring me!
There was a google toilet joke in Private Eye years ago. My nephew was around 5 and I read it to him and he thought it was real. I got a call from my sister asking why my nephew was terrified to use the toilet and kept saying the googles were going to come and look at him.
Flush those demons! At least 15 bigly, YUGE flushes.
Wow this takes me back. Eram eras erat, eramus eratis erant…
Latin class is always the best class.
Other foreign languages: you learn boring stuff like “Hi, my name is mkwt. What is your name? How are you?”
Latin: you learn the words for swords and various other weapons, and six different words for kill in the first two weeks.
(They do this because they’re prepping students to read Julius fucking Caesar as their first exposure to “real classical Latin.”)
This reminds me of “Sterculius, the Roman God of Feces” from Beavis and Butthead. Oh, the stupid shit that still resides in my brain…
So you’re the one who summoned the latest apocalypse!!
Never knew that about the word janitor. Makes Ahti’s job in Control have even more meaning since he also guards thresholds!
