Comparing Lemmy and Reddit is a bit icky in general, but for something I would like to see is improved cross-posting. Something like an option to show them as one post with shared votes and comments. A good chunk of that would probably be on the front end and there’s probably some pretty funky edge cases with how federation works. Also I’m sure a lot of people would not want that, so it would have to be optional I guess.

Lemmy can’t be as big as Reddit, there will also never be a “The Lemmy” network, all instances have their own rules and decide which instances to federate with.
I am on lemmy.zip, my lemmy experience is different from users on lemmy.world, hexbear, lemmygrad, lemmy.ml and so on.
We overlap in many ways, but there is no one true Lemmy experience, Reddit has a one true experience, if you create two new Reddit users, you can subscribe them both to the same Subreddits, but if you create a new user on lemmy.zip and lemmy.world, you may not be able to, since one might not be federated with with all instances the other is.
As for payment vouchers, since there is no core Lemmy, funds won’t be shared between instances, so we are stuck with funding individual Lemmy instances and the Lemmy dev team.
I would like to see lemmy get huge and that means more niche communities and so far as I have seen the mods and admins would be great. And I say this as a learning mod.

To financially contribute to the instances that you use in order to keep the instance alive and growing.
Community gardens only flourish when people contribute. You can give seeds, you can put in the work, or you can donate the land, but you got to contribute something.
My main issue is that I don’t see a clear way to contribute short of hunting down the developers on patreon or something.

What about a point system? That you can see how many points you have for your posts? Kind of like the karma thing on reddit?
I haven’t fully thought the idea through, but having combined communities - potentially just local for the users, or maybe somehow “shared” across instances.
For example, many instances have a politics community, so combine all three visually for the user alà multi-reddits, or something similar.
Possibly have instance level moderation. Instance A doesn’t like my post and can remove it from their community instance but instance B can still see it. Users from A can’t see it because their home instance doesn’t want to host that content, but B can still have it and interact
Came here to mention exactly this. It doesn’t sound too crazy, and would really help bring servers and communities to the where the users are and vice versa, with a bunch of extra benefits.
For example, right now !programmerhumor@lemmy.ml and !programmer_humor@programming.dev (and a bunch of others, but there are biggest I think) are basically the same thing, with many posts being posted to both simultaneously. If you subscribe to just one, you might miss half the community, but if you subscribe to both then you see duplicate posts in your feed, and the comments sections are separate causing less interactions and less fun.
I assume that both communities’ mod teams are aware of this issue, so would be happy to make the consolidate the communities into one if given the option, essentially mirroring each other. The nuances of how it all works - especially from a moderation perspective - is tricky but entirely possible to solve.
I have multi-community support via the Summit app. I’d think there’s got to be other these days also. It lets me keep track of all the various movie and TV groups all in one place along with a few other things where the individual communities are too small.
Having a single community that spans across instances is the big thing holding back more people from using Lemmy. You love topic X? Well which of the 5 communities dedicated to it do you wanna join? Just a confusing and suboptimal experience.
Try to make my community or technical contribution as cool and useful as possible. IMO the utility of Lemmy is really the ability to connect with other people all around the world based on our interests. The money is only important insofar as the devs and admins need money to eat.
Reddit is a business, one of whose least important goals seems to be maintaining a safe online space for humans to chat. Lemmy isn’t about the money; it’s about the people.
I have a few ideas for things that might be cool, but none of them are “silver bullets” that will make everyone immediately come over to Lemmy, and frankly they’re not special. IMO we need to slowly, “organically” create communities and technical infrastructure that people want to come to.
Now you got me interested what are your ideas that are not silver bullet or in your opinion is a silver bullet?
It’s really nothing interesting, but here’s some stuff that I think might make Lemmy cooler, but also don’t take this too seriously since I’m not in a mindset where I’m ready to code this stuff myself:
- More characters in profile bio. Too short!
- Direct democratic election of moderators for communities as a built-in option. For example, mods can be voted in or out somehow by community action.
- In general, multiple possible built-in technical structures to support multiple social structures.
- LaTeX support because I’m a math nerd.
Again, none of these are silver bullets, and IMO it’s more important to get the core features right first.

The biggest issue with Lemmy right now are the repost bots/communities.
Why would a Reddit user who is comfortable with the current state of Reddit move to Lemmy if the content is mostly the same, but with a big part of posts just being reposts with zero comments or interactions?
They won’t.
Get rid of the repost bots, they are just cluttering up Lemmy and preventing original content from being seen.
The bots were needed in the past, but no longer.

There are plenty of other instance specific bots that make it obvious that they are bots.
The only feature I can think of that Reddit has and Lemmy lacks is the ability to follow users… But that’s been implemented in Kbin and Mbin, and at this point I think it’s less of a missing feature and more of a choice from Lemmy; for the experience to be driven by communities of interest and avoid making a divide between big and small accounts.
There’s also the inability to post videos… Now uploading them would cause too big a strain on instances, so it’s absent for good reasons; but maybe they could be imbedded from yt or Yeertube links, so that they can be watched without exiting the webpage or client app? Tho the inconvenience is small.
I think the biggest thing to improve is integration with other fedi platforms. Following accounts may be out of the question, but it’d be cool if the whole Lemmy post could be seen from Mastodon without clicking (but maybe at that point it’s the Masto devs who must fix it?)
The thing I liked about Reddit, and the thing I like about Lemmy is the focus on the discussion over the users. Following individuals instead of topics feels really weird to me.
I understand the interest in the feature, just offering another perspective.
That being said, it would be cool to have a little tighter integration with Mastodon for that sort of thing. There are people here I would be happy to interact with outside of the narrow confines of a particular news article. It would be cool to link those contexts.

Instead of an Irish Car Bomb when I was stationed in Ireland nobody ever asked that even though it a simple guiness with a shot dropped. So came back to the state and was in New York and they had a Sept 11th car bomb. Because it was an Irish pub I thought they wanted to put their own spin on it. Basically it is you fill up a beer glass with vodka but only halfway. then they drop in a shot of whiskey then they fill the rest up with vodka. Trust me it only takes like maybe one or two and your pretty much forgetting the night.
