US Democratic Congresswoman LaMonica McIver has been indicted for “forcibly impeding and interfering” with federal law enforcement over a recent confrontation outside an immigration centre.

A scuffle occurred during her visit to the Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) centre in Newark, New Jersey, on 9 May.

The incident drew widespread attention, as it unfolded at a time when the Republican administration of US President Donald Trump has faced sharp criticism from opposing Democrats over its hard-line approach to immigration.

Ms McIver, who faces a maximum term of 17 years in prison, has called the charges a “brazen attempt at political intimidation” and says she will plead not guilty.

A federal grand jury in New Jersey brought the three-count indictment against Ms McIver on Tuesday. It replaces the two assault charges that she previously faced.

It would be nice if the democratic party & leadership could be bothered to do something.

This is literally an article about an NJ democrat who was arrested at a protest where other NJ democratic party politicians were arrested. My 2nd choice for governor, Ras Baraka, was arrested there as well. McIver was trying to prevent this illegal arrest.

The issue isnt that no one is doing anything it is that not enough of us are.

You’re collectively going to have to put on your big boy pants and not delegate saving your democracy.

I’m sure a bunch of aides are furiously typing up letters stating their disapproval and concern at this very moment. A show of force like that ought to get Trump to back down.

This is meaningless, it’s just a grand jury. As they say, “a grand jury could indict a ham sandwich”.

You can. Take to the streets. Bring your family and friends. Meet like minded people. Organize. If you aren’t into protesting, make food and bring it. Bring medical supplies and water. Feed the hungry. Help the injured. Document what is happening.

The only way to end it is to force the end.

I see a lot of comments from Americans these days along the lines of “someone needs to save us!”

        Home of the brave, indeed.

Every single person in our military literally swore an oath to defend the constitution against domestic threats.

We don’t need ‘someone to save us’, we need the people employed into the systems designed specifically to stop enemies of the US like Donald Trump to do their fucking job.

But yeah, shy of that apparently-fucking-pipedream, when legal justice isn’t on the table, vigilante justice is all that’s left. We also have a subculture in the US obsessed with the 2nd amendment that regularly has wet dreams about using their trusty boomstick to save the US from tyranny, so if one of them does want to step up and save us I certainly wouldn’t complain.

We seem to have a lot of would-be heroes asleep at the wheel.

Yeah. I’m willing to be pleasantly surprised, but at this point I feel like it would be a surprise. For generations the slogans have sounded great but it’s time to put money where those mouths have been.

Go on, America, prove me wrong.

100%. Whatever spine the US built its foundation on has long since dissolved.

Go on, America, prove me wrong.

              We will not.
