We live in the UK. She didn’t go any further than this. I got her to download TOR and use the “old.Reddit” trick to bypass this so it was only mildly infuriating for her in the end

I got a 3 day ban, 2nd offence, on my 6th account, after the 3-day ban I abandon the account.

Only took 6 weeks this time and I was watching myself. They have dishonest moderation At Site wide level and I do not want to use it at all either, unless maybe two Shuffle people to the fediverse.

          They have dishonest moderation

The mods are also unaccountable. They can (and do) simply ignore your DMs asking for details or reconsideration of your ban. And even if they do respond, the reasoning will be a short gibberish response that you cannot appeal.

Also many will remove your comments without telling you, it appears to be posted, I learned reveddit showed you what was removed.

But yeah mods work for free so allowing their petty tyranny is a selling point of the gig, not sure how lemmy works, did see one dude that said banned user arguing with people on another instance.

The audience over there is definitely a lot less intelligent than we have over here. And the bots & reposts & even bots COMMENTING are probably an overwhelming majority of the audience over there. It’s sick & pointless & a waste of time & I must break the addiction.

I’m not gonna lie, I visit Reddit too, but without an account and in private, for 3 and only communities. Most of my time is Lemmy. You can start slowly like I do. People use to complain about dead niche communities here, but no one contributes like some users do every day here. Be the change and help communities grow, so you don’t have to go back to Reddit.

This sounds more like a “fuck UK age restriction laws” not reddit.

The UK’s age restriction laws online are now enforced under the Online Safety Act (OSA), which requires online platforms to verify the age of users before they access categories of “harmful” content, including pornography and content related to self-harm or eating disorders. Websites, apps, and services hosting such content must implement robust age checks, with platforms facing significant fines or blocking if they fail to comply. Methods for age verification can include facial age estimation, ID scanning, or credit card checks.

“Estimate age from selfie”?! Wtf have we become…

    When I was 14, I looked like I was 20. When I was 20, I looked like I was 35. When I was 35, I looked like I was 50. You can’t determine someone’s actual age from a fucking photo. Jesus.

I have perpetually looked like I’m 12 since 2008. That’s the most common number people always give me when they guess my age. I’m so sure an AI would somehow guess correctly.

Reddit doesn’t really care; they’re going to do the bare minimum legally so they can feed more ads and get more clicks.

When I was working at a local supermarket, we had the instructions to explicitly ask anyone for ID that we deemed 40 or younger, when they tried to buy tobacco or alcohol. For that exact reason.

Reddit needs a better tagging system than just NSFW. It was pointless having a filter when you don’t subscribe to any porn subreddits and all the ones you are subscribed to don’t allow porn in the first place. It’s only natural people started using NSFW for other things, most notably spoilers, which I believe they’ve added in recent years. If you had the filter enabled, you ended up missing out on content.

Fun fact: I can’t see the screenshot as I’m in the UK and your instance has taken the maximally paranoid literal meaning of the OSA and blocked access just in case anything’s accidentally not flagged as NSFW.

You know how everybody blames boomers for various things, which had nothing to do with them, they were merely victims of the capitalist corrupt systems they lived under? This is your generation’s failure to address the needs of the future. Good luck.

With how the law is written, if you think anyone might ever make a mistake (likely), think the government might ever bother going through the hassle of enforcing it (probably less likely if you’re not running a big website), and don’t have loads of spare money to pay huge fines with or to pay an age verification service with (likely), then blocking the UK is the only way to be compliant. It doesn’t require a technicality. The law just doesn’t have any leeway for honest minor mistakes or small hobbyist websites.

But still, the image should load from your local instance right? So in that commenters case, lemmy.world right?

Edit: at least on my instance, it appears to go through a proxy on my local instance:

          https://images.lemmy.zip/api/v3/image_proxy?url=https%3A%2F%2Flemmings.world%2Fpictrs%2Fimage%2F3b9a4c4b-3079-4e67-a5e2-0cd49074d81f.png
