Oh sure when Tom Brady says his dog is a clone it’s newsworthy, but when I say that the Prime Minister is a clone created by reptilian lizard people and that he looks in my window at night when I’m sleeping I “need to be medicated” and “I’m a danger to myself and others” RIIIIIIGGGGHHHHHTTTY

This is nothing new or fake. There is no need to use the word “claim” like you think he is lying. I personally have a friend who spent like $50,000 or $100,000 to clone one of her dogs… twice.

I guarantee he has more money than she does (though she is ridiculously wealthy), so I have no doubts he did something that rich people have been doing for a decade.

EDIT: Yes, I know that is ESPN’s headline, not OPs.

I remember all the headlines about cloning “Dolly the sheep” years ago, then that was it. Discussion of the tech in the mainstream stopped. So I always assumed that at that point there were sketchy human trials ongoing and its just not advertised.

Yep, it’s the “probably” that creates the ethics conundrum. We won’t know how to improve the process without testing the process, and we cannot ethically create “test” humans like that scene in Alien Resurrection where all the failed Sigourney clones are sitting in jars, suffering and begging for death.

Piff the Magic Dragon also had his dog Mr. Piffles cloned before he passed. From what I understand, he tried finding another dog but they never really fit in his act the same way so as Mr. Piffles started to get older, he cloned him and now has Mr. Piffles 2.0.

It’s not cheap but I don’t think Tom Brady cares about how much it costs.

Cloning can be cruel. The dogs still need a mother to carry them to term. These “moms” are treated as broodmares in a lab. Often the puppies are miscarried or deformed, requiring multiple tries.

And much like human twins or triplets, the animal can look exactly the same but have a completely different personality.

Cloning as a rule is kinda fucky, if memory serves right there was an Ibex species that was cloned out of extinction awhile back and most of the subjects were stillborn, except for one that basically died immediately after. But that was also using a sheep surrogate so maybe the species barrier introduced complications.

So? I claim that his claim is a claim indeed. You can claim too – try it. Claiming is fun!
