A sailor who jumped from the USS Abraham Lincoln this month in what his wife described as a suicide attempt is now facing disciplinary action from the Navy, according to his wife and charging documents reviewed by MS NOW.
Asked about the decision to pursue nonjudicial punishment for suicide attempts, a Navy official said, “The Navy is fully committed to the health and wellbeing of every Sailor. We strive to foster environments that support mental health by removing barriers to seeking help, increasing awareness of resources, and taking appropriate action when someone is in need. Mental health resources are available to our Sailors 24/7, and asking for help is a sign of strength.”
Her husband jumped overboard on Aug. 3, she said, and was medically evacuated and returned to San Diego on Aug. 13, where he then spent five days at Naval Medical Center San Diego, known as Balboa. During that stay, she said medical staff monitored his vital signs, but he did not see a psychiatrist or a therapist. He was told to report back to work immediately after his release. His first therapy appointment came on Aug. 26, nearly two weeks after he arrived back in San Diego.

Military life is hard. Even non-combat deployments are incredibly stressful. I know so many guys who broke up with their partners within a month of starting their first roto. It’s not easy to be away from your friends and family for extended periods of time, and it’s not easy being around the same coworkers 24/7 in a god damn pressure cooker with no privacy or alone time.
For the sailors on the Lincoln, it’s much, much worse. No internet because they’re under combat conditions, moldy showers, not enough food, broken down laundries, failing infrastructure… It’s a nightmare. What these guys are dealing with is not normal, and no sane military would have kept this deployment running as long as they have.
Mental resilience is a huge component of being a part of any military. It’s the single most important skill a soldier, sailor or airman can have. Being a good shot or able to ruck thirty miles are useless if you crack as soon as the shooting starts. But mental resilience can only carry you so far. This situation is well beyond what anyone is trained to deal with.
But unfortunately the US Military is being run by a draft dodger and a guy whose service record consisted of throwing keggers, so “mental health” is something that only happens to queers and liberals, and they probably think that the guys jumping off the deck are paid by Soros. This is only going to get worse. Apparently, the Lincoln is being given 3 days of R&R and then it’s back to the endless hell with them.
That’s 2 days of R&R, because they’ll have to man the ship in 3 duty sections, 1 day each, in order to have any time off at all.

A lot of this would be more manageable if they had some sense that they were actually doing some kind of good with their sacrifice. There’s been extensive study on this subject, and one thing that comes up time and again is that soldiers who have a clear sense of what they’re doing and why - basically, what the hell they’re actually fighting for - show far better mental resilience and far lower incidences of PTSD and other traumas. But for these poor bastards, even their commander in chief seems to have no idea what they’re actually doing there, and their secretary of defense is too busy freaking out about the transgenders to actually give a shit. So, little hope of that.

Yeah. I just had some people in my personal life who were good at separating their work from how they treated my family or me. Lately I’m kind of questioning if they ever really did or if civilians are some kind of lesser human to them and they see most people as weak.
No, most people in the military are just normal people. There’s assholes in all walks of life.

Propaganda and desperation. We would literally need an anti-recruitment campaign to discourage people from signing up in high schools everywhere but the alternatives aren’t exactly appealing.
Imagine spreading propaganda. A lot of influencers are sponsored by the military and they find new ways to hire new people. And with all those personnel and money they still lose wars. A lot of that money should have been spent for healthcare and education.
Watching the excitement over the recent Top Gun sequel made me sick, there’s no need to glorify our ongoing terror campaigns like that.

Armies in different countries do different things.
In Canada, I entered the army as it’s how poor kids get a college education. End-of.
Our army isn’t the same as the seppo grunts, as we are an armed force and that’s an idea drilled into us regularly. We’re solders second, an armed force first.
Take away the guns and there’s still a lotta value in a bunch of people trained in coordinating and communicating, who know CPR and how to work a radio, who can work as a unit, even if it’s not doing shooty-pow-pow. And ammo’s pricy anyway.
Because in the US the military is a good way to get out of poverty. It gives you all the “socialist” stuff you get for free in other countries. You know, free education, health insurance, pensions and disability benefits. It also pays relatively well for someone that has no other skills and qualifications.
Its zero entry bar, mostly comfortable, well paying job.

Context: IANAL, it’s been over a decade since my story, so details might be dated or incorrect. I don’t fully agree with the process.
I think this is normal. I knew a guy commit suicide and they still did this. To be clear, the young man passed away. I think it’s supposed to get help where it’s needed, raise accountability, and to make final determinations regarding benefits. It’s definitely a reactive policy, causes more harm than good, and oftentimes is too late.
I’m pretty sure none of the disciplinary charges will stick if it’s proved a genuine suicide attempt. It’s really difficult to prove otherwise, even without knowing the things we do that lead up to this.
I hope he gets the care and support he needs, it’s going to be rough.
And get mental health aid, right? Right? No, guess not, based on the decades of lackluster aid from other veterans needing it.
