I’m here from Reddit. They banned me for absolutely no reason. That’s frustrating. How works Lemmy ?

Landlords, billionaires, AI, Reddit = Bad

    Beans, Linux = good

    Marxist-Leninists = it’s complicated

It’s not that complicated, Half of the population are Marxist Leninist, and the other half thinks MLs are subhuman and being shot to death is a fate too kind.

Something I haven’t seen people talk about is the nature of the fediverse in terms of the philosophy of separate instances.

There are a lot of “general” instances that are kind of like mini-reddits. Lots of users sign up from all over, communities for a wide variety of interests. But there are also instances with a specific focus.

For example, I’m a member of midwest.social so when I look at the “local” feed, I only get communities relating to the US midwest. But of course, I can still subscribe and interact with other communities on federated insances.

Think of it like email. You can sign up for the big general purpose emails (google, outlook, icloud, etc). But you might want something different, perhaps privacy focused like Proton or Tuta. Or you can have an “instance” for your work where everyone gets an @company.com email. Or maybe you just want to spin up your own email with a vanity domain.

No matter which email server you use, you can still communicate with people on separate servers.

You don’t have to stick with the first account you create. In fact, I’d recommend that you try a few instances before you settle on one.

Beyond separate instances, there are also alternatives to Lemmy that are very similar but do some things differently. Mbin, Kbin, and Piefed are examples. And again, thanks to federation standards and everything being built to be compatible, you can subscribe to a Lemmy community from Mbin and vice versa.

There’s about 20 monumental assholes here that are responsible for almost all of the squabbling and drama.

Use the BLOCK function liberally, every time you find someone who’s just a complete asshat, block them.

Eventually you’ll catch the big fish and life will get easier around here and you won’t have these morons to deal with.

There is no karma here. Don’t worry too much about being downvoted every now and then.

Also, I like sorting by scaled. It’s like sorting by hot, except it pushes smaller, niche communities up. Which is great if you don’t want your feed to just be news articles.

I recommend looking at everything in ‘settings’. There are some cool things you can do, such as limiting your home page solely to communities you’re subscribed to.

Also, blocking works differently here. People you block will still see your posts, you just won’t see their replies. (Which I find to be kinda fun, personally.)

    1. Think about things you like.
    2. Look for community about said thing
    3. If it exists, GREAT! contribute content And have fun!

3-A. If it DOESN’T exist, make it. THEN contribute & have fun!

    1. Become a linux user.

Hey now, I’m not on Lemmy because I love Linux and despise the AI hype cycle.

      I mean…I do love Linux…and I do despise the AI hype cycle…

But that’s not why I’m on Lemmy.

I mean, not the only reasons.

Change post type to All and sort by Active. Start blocking communities that you don’t want to see and subscribing to communities that interest you.

If you are like me and you want to see where everyone is talking, change your sort to New Comments instead of Active.

Honestly, it’s pretty left wing and there can be duplicates of communities. There’s far less content than on Reddit but I find that better because I lost weeks of my life doom scrolling on Reddit. I hit a point on here where I just have to wait for more stuff to appear. One good thing about that is you can comment on something and actually be heard. Not like on Reddit where all but the most niche communities have 200+ comments on each post.

Also, and this is a big one, you have to be running Linux.

            #ME2

            I mean, I didn’t when I joined Lemmy, but I do now.

I don’t think Lemmy was the deciding factor, Microsoft almost forced me by checking how much they can enshitificate win11 before users start exploding.

That’s perfectly valid. If Windows suits your needs and priorities, use it. I use Windows on my work laptop because Linux would be a nightmare with all the tools and apps we use. But personal laptop? Linux all the way.

In case you’re serious, Lemmy is the hot, exciting, punk, rebel version of reddit and Linux is the hot, exciting, punk, rebel version of using your computer. The motivation for using either are quite similar.

It’s okay if you’re not linux, but there are a lot of those users here. You’ll hear a lot about it, lol.

It is not an anger factory here either for the most part. You’re coming around election time, so there is a bit of it. You might go through a bit of withdrawal.

Also, the more difficult your Linux distribution is to use, the more respect you’ll receive.

      E.g. Ubuntu < NixOS < LFS

Today I finished setting up local searxng on NixOS. I made it so that when the searxng module is enabled the searxng will get added to firefox as custom and default search engine which is pretty neat.

E: Otherwise if the module is disabled then ddg is used as a fallback.

Any server with “ml” or “grad” in the name is a conservative server pretending to be progressive. These types of conservatives are called “tankies”. They pretend to be “leftists”, but they support genocide, dictatorships and violence against minorities and vulnerable classes.

Tankies are conservatives who lie about who they are, hoping to confuse the normal people on the left. They are the cancer of Lemmy. They will never engage in good faith. Never. Treat them as the conservatives they are and never believe a word they say.

.world isn’t the worst option, but if you’re looking to escape inexplicable moderation and power tripping self indulgence, you may want to look for another instance to host your account.

Also if you’re against genocide, you will have different values than their moderators who are active genocide apologists and use their moderation to silence anyone who stands up against it.

Just to stress that, different instances/sites have different admins with different rules just like communities have mods and their rules. If there’s an issue with a given instance then you can block it or move away from it while generally keeping access to the same content unlike centralised social media where you’d be forced to either accept abuse of power or lose access to everything. What I mean is that if you find your instance to be problematic then you can look for an alternative one that fits your values better instead of completely abandoning the fediverse. I also mean that you can block whole instances from your feed which can work quite well for some instances that are more topic focused than others. For example, if you don’t like anime then blocking ani.social will hide a good chunk of anime communities from you since people like to create anime communities there.

Tankies sont des soi disants gauchistes. Ils appuient l’usage des char d’assaults (tanks) pour écrasser des manifestants par les gouvernements communistes. Et plus loin de la, les Américains sont les méchants. Alors leurs enemis sont les bons.

It works a lot like reddit. I joined several months ago, previously a heavy reddit user, now im a heavy Lemmy user, never looked back. I recommend browsing all for now as the Fediverse is still growing and feel free to make any communities you have interest in. Welcome, hope you like it here as much as I do!
