Yes. The average reddit user NOW is further right than the average reddit user before the start of lemmy. Different people. The most left ones are with lemmy now.
reddit heavily allows astroturfing and banning from the “left” more than the right.
also because they banned or astroturfed to hell. right wing propaganda is very popular for the masses, and creates content.
because we all got banned from reddit for having controversial political views.
That’s an interesting take. I would have thought that reddit trended left previously and just shifted further left over time.
there is still some on the left, but it seems like its just for appearances by reddit, they allow enough to look fair, while they allow right wing propaganda to astroturf the comments of any subs to hell.
Yes. Even putting aside what enshittification has done to the userbase in recent years, Reddit has always skewed Democrat, Fediverse skews leftist.
Reasonable
enshittification as in promoting more AI bots, and propaganda. consistent effort to curb the propaganda or right wing harmful comments have been met with significant resistance. yea reddit did do these regular purges to eliminate bots, but they seemed to have done less or stopped doing it altogether. instead thier purges were going after the lowest hanging fruits.
OF accounts, IRL users like us, the ones that drop links to thier businesses.
Yes. Like extremely
The average reddit user is a bot
u/WordWord_1234 Usernames are sus af fuck
Accounts whose profile page have urls starting with
reddit.com/uare also sus.xD
Can’t really judge an account by those generic usernames, because that’s the default format reddit generates unless a real human user decides to manually change it before locking it in.
That seems a lot like a reason to judge those accounts as not people? More than accounts that don’t match that format, anyway… Who uses an auto-generated username??
People can use auto-generated usernames if they want to. When I was new to Reddit, didn’t know I was allowed to change the username before it finalized.
reddit suppresses leftist message, outside of center right. now it allows more astroturfing from the right through israel and russia. and were not talking about the extremes like tankies.
Before or after reddit started capitulating to fascists and mass bans?
capitulated to MUSK like 2 times, which resulted in 2 massive ban waves. earlier in the year. we also know spez loves MUSk and the gop.
Yes
The average Reddit user only exists on a server farm these days
I don’t know about the average user, but the average commenter - almost definitely, yes. Making any kind of centrist or right-leaning noises here gets you mobbed instantly, so most people just don’t bother. Whether that reflects the actual majority or just a loud minority remains unclear.
Depends on the community. There’s some absolute nutters over on things like hexbear and Lemmy ML.
Probably the latter, as with most things.
it’s usually just one or two people you offended who feel compelled to harass you based on that offense.
i’ve already had a couple of lemmy stalkers.
Reddit is main-stream, so should be (and is) mostly centered. Lemmy is more niche and while it has some far right people, it overall leans left.
Lemmy is more niche and … overall leans left.
Like Reddit used to be in the good days.
i remember reddit being full of techie libertarian bros in the 2000s. it non-authoritarian but it was pretty conservative socially. tons of fragile masculinity brogrammer types who had really warped views on women and ‘the government’.
it started diversifying rapidly in the early 2010s.
yucky, incels. where did they fled here? they probably were on instagram, facebook. one of the favorite refuges when someone is confronted about thier behavior on reddit they flee to facebook, where they can unilaterally delete messages, admin controls(when a community or a fan of a person/youtube channel).
i forgot the channel name, but i think finebros were confronted on reddits AMA about thier shilling for a company. they fled to facebook where they can have thier echochamber.
that was prior to trumps 1st term, remember the subreddit apocalypse they started banning alot of subs that were “problematic”, it was just placating the GOP and trump who are obsessed with online censorhsip at a time, which was convenient distraction from thier “1st tax cuts”. thats when people were getting significant amount of bans around that time. i was there when r/conspiracy wasnt even political, just your usual conspiracies that have been talked about, that doesnt involved trump, or dems.
before the anti-vax madness of covid, that sub pre-pandemic allowed you to somewhat convince people who are hesitant of vaccines.
Right wing instances are usually quarantined(aka blocked, defederated) which doesnt exist on reddit, because they need all the divisiveness there is on reddit to drive the propaganda.
I just got banned for 7 days from Reddit for “threatening violence” for saying the Trump administration deserves the death penalty (which is an actual thing that exists legally in the US) and that the GOP should be dissolved.
A few days ago, an AskReddit thread led me to a group where men were promoting rape and violence against women. Reddit did not ban that.
You tell me.
EDIT: Something funny from the message they sent me: “Reddit is a place for creating community and belonging, not for threatening violence against people or animals.” I wish they’d clarify whether it was people or animals that I threatened. It continues “Any communities or people that threaten violence towards an individual, group, animals, or place will be banned.” Not the one where a bunch of dudes were promoting rape, though.
Something similar happened to me like 2 - 3 days ago. I legit didn’t use it for over 2 years, and then a couple of months ago someone hacked the account and made it a porn thing. I didn’t want that associated to any email address that was mine, so I “re-claimed” the account, and removed all of the porn. I barely ever post on there, but I was drunk and said something along the lines of what you said in one of the leftish subreddits. I didn’t get banned, but I got a warning. Fuck that. Warn my nuts.
Funny, I saw a post on Reddit just yesterday from someone who got porn-hacked. Hackers are hornier than they used to be
Me, I wasn’t drunk. I was provoked. Pretty sure that legally I’m bulletproof given the circumstance (it was a reaction to far-right ragebait being on the White House website)
Significantly further left. Communists and anarchists barely exist on reddit while it also has some major right wing subs. Communists and anarchists are a prominant feature of lemmy while it contains almost 0 explicitly right wing communities of significance.
I did notice there are no conservative subs and the one labeled as such is clearly not. You’re right about the communist and anarchists too.
I think that one originally was started for conservatives, but then it got abandoned and someone asked the admins if they could have it to make it a satire sub. Also, your instance does block a fair bit of comms, including ones that are for right-wing (like communities with taglines or website names about being racist and misgendering people) or tankies.
conservative communities/subs die very fast if they cant crosspost, or troll on other lemmy threads or instances. because to survive as a rigid echo chamber they need the left to argue with.
What instance blocks no communities?
Probably none that aren’t like someone’s personal self-hosted server intended for only them. I doubt I’d want to join such either. And any that don’t probably get blocked by other comms anyways, so it wouldn’t really matter.
i don’t know about no communities, but my instance doesn’t block very many instances. link
I did notice there are no conservative subs
They exist on Lemmy, though your home instance may be blocking them or their home instances, or you just may not have seen them.
lemmy.worldhas a fair few instances on their block list. I’ve had to block a few of the more egregious MAGA communities myself.Remember, Lemmy (as a network) is censorship resistant, not censorship free.
many lemmy instances will defederate from conservative subs.
they did but they are usually astroturfed by right wingers, and center rights. and i assume many also recieved bans because they behaved like conservatives when commenting.
Well since reddit pretends to be far right (and full of bots which is another topic but also renders reddit fake & useless), and most of us are here because Reddit was intolerant of our defiance to adhere to its right-wingedness, yeah I’d say fediverse is left. We’re free people who refuse to have our free-thinking & free speech squashed.
reddits trying to replace it with AI bots, much like facebook is right now. a hybrid child of facebook and Xitter.
I’d say there’s a wider spectrum on reddit, if only because reddit is so much bigger. Lemmy is mostly center left while reddit goes everywhere.
Yeah that seems to be the case. If lemmy were larger it would probably have a wider variety. When conservatives get banned on reddit I think they go to Twitter or 4chan. Whereas liberals may flock here.
Further weird, yes.
