Why is living simply and within your needs viewed negatively?

Meanwhile, having $1000 worth of throw pillows that are purely decorative, is some sort of achievement?

FWIW I live alone in a 2bed/1bath condo that’s 1100 sq ft, and people tell me my place is ‘too small’ and I need a 3+bed/2+bath place that’s like 1500sqft. Baffles me. and by people I mean, mostly women. Most men think my place is plenty spacious and great.

The house I grew up in was 1200 sq ft with 5 people. Blows my mind that the apartment I own is basically the same size as a house, but apparently unless I live in a McMansion sized space, I ‘have issues’.

The definition of financial happiness is the difference between how much you make and how much you spend.

While some poor jerk is spending the next 30 years paying 30% of their income on a mortgage, you’ve got everything you need at a 10th the cost and can afford to weather whatever comes at you.

1100 sq ft alone sounds massive to me, and I’m a woman. I live alone with 2 cats in a 700 sq ft apartment and it feels perfect and even slightly spacious. I have a nice sized living room that houses my computer desk and my bookshelves, a largish kitchen/dining room, a big bedroom with a tiny walk in closet, and a larger than normal bathroom with a washer/dryer in a closet. I love it and I wish I could take it with me when I inevitably move away from the area.

      • Yeah, my first apartment was 750 square feet and I thought it was great. Got married, had kids, upgraded houses a couple times. I’m old now, and my wife left a little over a year ago. I’m in a condo that’s 1375 with just my cat. I was worried that it was going to feel cramped after being in a big, two story house, but it doesn’t at all. It’s really bigger than I need, but I have a guest room in case any of the kids want to stay over or my wife comes to visit, and I have an office for my desk and computer. I know I could have been fine with smaller, but this feels great, honestly.

          To put it bluntly, yes.

After reading your reply to someone else, you seem to be wrapped up in what all of those people think about you. If you can unwrap yourself without cutting them out, do that. It’ll take a lot of quiet confidence and being able to let their criticisms roll off your back.

That’s hard to do when you’re in a hole, and nobody wants to support your getting out of it. (And by hole, I mean your mental state, not your financial situation.) You should connect with people who support you, not with people who continue to push you down.

lol dude, they are my friends and family. I can’t not be wrapped up in them.

Let me just never talk to people again I’ve known for 20+ years because they don’t think the place I live is nice enough…

Personally I’ll never understand the absolutist attitudes that are so prevalent on here or reddit. But hey, I use Windows computers, drive a car, and play video games on a console, I’m a heathen!

You can tell me these magical ‘supportive’ people exist, but to me they are entirely theoretical and I’ll take real people over theoretical people. Just because folks don’t support me one way doesn’t mean they haven’t supported me in others. But again… everything on the internet is this absolutist/extremist take. Clearly if I make a comment on the internet… about a legit social issue… I must be the one with a deep personal issue and insecurity or something… lol

This meme is a take on the whole sexist ‘how dare men be happy with a simple home’ thing. You know that, right? The ‘issue’ would exist regardless of me mentioning or not. I was simple relating to it in my own personal way, as I find it amusing how true this is, how folks get bent out of shape over my own home being ‘too little’ and I don’t see ‘the issue’ with it that they do.

But maybe I should just buy $5000 worth of fancy pillows and that would solve it.

You’re the one who brought it up. If you’re already fine with it, and I misread your several comments as your being conflicted about all that, forgive me. But “You can tell me these magical ‘supportive’ people exist, but to me they are entirely theoretical” really doesn’t sound like you’re okay with it.

All that said, just because people are family doesn’t mean they can’t be shitty shitty people. Just because you’ve known someone a long time doesn’t necessarily make them a friend.

                Dude, it’s lemmy.

anything anyone says means some random person has to come out of the wood work and turn into a historical battle of good vs evil.

you can’t say ‘i like cake’ here without someone appearing to lecture you how enjoying cake makes you a fascist who supports the gaza genocide and if you REALLY were anti-fascist like they are, you’d never enjoy cake again and destroy all previously memories of cake enjoyment

my family are just people man. they aren’t especially shitty people, they are just normal americans. they like football and hamburgers and the suburbs and vote republican. so basically… they are pure evil incarnate for the lemmy userbase. I am the weirdo to them, with my urban living and my small car and my democrat votes.

but some of us have lived our entire lives in a gray area of compromise, and see nothing wrong with that. it’s just how ordinary everyday life is… full of compromise, faults, mistakes, and laughing about it. not all of us are holy keyboard warriors.

You are not allowed to be modest and enjoy your life here. You have to always be striving for more and deeply unhappy with what you already have. It’s the national religion.

I wonder how much of the gender divide just comes from social conditioning. Most women I know have been told from a young age to plan to grow their family and add people to a household, but most of the guys are expected to just exist until it’s time and to then find a house big enough for (???) people. That being said, I think 2-Bed/2-Bath is the sweet spot for most people.

Maybe that’s a cultural thing. I came from a cult where everything was centered around making new cult members, either through recruitment or reproduction. We even were taught to fuck and time our kids’ birth such that they would be the oldest in their grade school class. There’s social bullshit what goes along with being the oldest in class, better opportunities. The reasoning wasn’t for the kids, it was for the cult. Fucking cults. That usually means Fall birthdays, so Winter conception.

most single people, or most couples? i’d agree with the latter.

fwiw most women I meet who say this are anti-kid. but they still want large homes. I don’t get it, but we’re not compatible anyway. I’d rather have a kid and live in a small place… sinking all my money into a large childless home is just weird to me.

2b/2b (or 1.5 bathrooms) hits a sweet spot because it can give you/a spouse a private bedroom and bathroom, a separate bathroom for guests or a child/spouse to use, and a second room that can be a bedroom, guestroom, office or hobby room. It’s also a layout that can work well at 900-1100 sqft, especially if it’s not a ranch layout with a hallway eating usable space.

yeah i could use a second bathroom sometimes, but it’s not that big of a deal. i do have a hallway that i suppose cuts into my space, but it’s basically the playroom for the pets.

I dunno, it seems in my demographic people expect 1500-2000 sq ft for two people, or 2500+ for a family. I’ve also been in other people’s 1/2beds that are quite nice and spacious and listened to them complain about how awful and small they were.

i am considering buying a house, but really for the yard, not so much more housing space, and also to just move to a cheaper and more vibrant place.

Baffles me. and by people I mean, mostly women. Most men think my place is plenty spacious and great.

This is so weird, because I also have anecdotes about lots of women who live in 500sqft studios and love it, and their male partners/friends judge them for not having more space because they can’t stay over or “party” there. My roommate’s ex-boyfriend was like this, and we lived in a 2bed/2.5bath.

It’s as if you’ve surrounded yourself with assholes, and decided it’s a gendered problem.

Rooms I have in my house that I need/want

      • master bedroom
      • master bath
      • bedroom for kid
      • guest bedroom
      • secondary/guest bathroom.
      • room for my office
      • room for wife’s office
      • some room for laundry (garage would suffice)
      • living room
      • dining room
      • kitchen
      • storage/craft/gym/tools

But maybe I’m just later on in my housing journey cause I used to be able to survive in a tiny area but now I have a wife and a kid. I don’t know if I could go to a tiny apartment without something really tragic happening in my life

The pots obviously. They’re called chamberpots for a reason. The kid keeps breaking them instead of cleaning them out however. All because he found a couple rupees once that had fallen in while I was doing the deed. Well, I knew they were in there, just wan’t worth trying to retrieve them, ya know? I tried telling him he can get the rupees if he cleans them out too. But he didn’t listen to that either. I replace the chamberpots as soon as he leaves, but he just comes right back and breaks them again.

And he wonders why we are poor and his mom is gone.

That’s what my grandmother and I used for the first 5 years of my life. For toilet paper we used the Sears catalog. (this was in the early 70’s, the catalog came mostly similar to newspaper except the middle 10 pages or so were the glossy color ones which do not work for that purpose.)

It really wasn’t bad, except in the winter. Canadian winters and outhouses are a special experience… you did not dawdle when on one of those missions.

    I see an issue…

There’s three too many pots in there. Someone really oughta throw them against the wall.
