I’ve always seen signs posted next to speed humps and bumps for additional notice they are there, in addition to the paint on them.
It looks like there should be a sign on the right next to the bump, but it’s missing and just the empty pole.
Ah, I see you’ve encountered one of the ancient monoliths. Once a yellow pillar of the community, these behemoths delighted neighborhood children who would spend hours playing with them. Many skateboards and scooters were propelled upwards by these olden obstacles, but bicycles were the most well-regarded. And these highlighter highlights could make any child on a bicycle feel like a king. Those who could wheelie achieved jumps, those who could balance achieved wheelies, and those who could do neither taught everyone the importance of a helmet. “But I can’t do it!” the smaller ones would yell, and others would shout, “faster! You gotta go FASTER!” Some would become airborne, but all would finish laying down, usually having shared considerable patches of skin with the pavement.
Yes, once a mighty watering hole for the daring, this archaic entertainment has laid down and breathed its last. Its once bright yellow skin has fallen off over the years, revealing a rotting blemish on the road. Where there was once cheers and laughter surrounding this proud protrusion, now lies a pile of bones and the modern chants of “god damnit! Where did that come from?!”
Time to do some civic vigilantism it looks. Buy a reflective yellow spraypaint and give that speedbump its caution lines back.
In the book and movie The grapes of wrath the watchman at the camp entrance says of the speed bump: it protects the kids playing in the camp because asking drivers to slow down doesn’t work, but after speeding over the bump they never forget.

Congratulations on living somewhere where walking/biking is viable.
living somewhere where it isn’t should make you hate cars more
Seeing all the comments defending the bump is wild. He’s coming up to a clear turn, 1. 2, what if someone is driving on that road for the first time? Do they deserve damage to their car for going the fucking speed limit‽
Seriously, all speed bumps need to be visibly painted.
It probably was originally but overtime the paint wears off
Time to repaint it then, in the interest of public good.
(No anger directed towards you)
the point of speed bumps isn’t to slow to a crawl just before you hit them and then carry on speeding (which is what everyone does…)
if you’re actually going the speed limit, it shouldn’t damage anything…
Most speed bumps/humps these days require you to go below the speed limit to avoid damage to the car unless you’re driving some jacked-up monster with loose suspension.
Idk…a lot of speed bumps I’ve come across are crazy violent. They aren’t sloped enough and instead project upwards very abruptly.
Obviously, not every speed bump is the same, but still.
I really would prefer for hidden speed bumps to not exist when I’m riding my motorcycle, for example, where that can be a rather dangerous “feature” of the road.
You haven’t encountered many of these short speed bumps. The longer ones are like that. But no short speed bumps is safe to go over at anything but a crawl.
Most speed bumps in the usa will fuck up your car, or at least give you a really bad day if you hit them at anything over 3mph. There are milder versions with names like “speed pillows” that let you go a little faster, but even those don’t let you go the full speed limit.
Yeah that speed bump holds the memories (and undercarriage shavings) of all the cars that traveled that road for the first time.
I literally couldn’t find it until I zoomed in a lot. That’s pretty bad.
Speed bumps where I’m from are usually wider and clearly marked, similar to this picture I found online:

That’s a “speed pillow”. There is a whole range of different types, bumps, humps, pillows, pads, etc that all have different applications and effects.
Those ones actually work better. The short, sharp shock ones can be hit at speed if you have a good suspension. The slow ones like that will lift the rear end off the ground if you go too fast, they’re way more effective.
The effective term, at least in Southern California for the low long ones are ‘humps’ as opposed to the short tall ‘speed bumps’.
God bless SPEED HUMP signs. They give college kids something to steal and decorate their dorm rooms with.
Depending on the party, there will also be speed bumps involved
Now I want one.
“my humps my humps my humps”
There are also “speed tables” that are even longer and are flat-topped with sloped sides, along with “raised intersections” which are speed tables that take up the entire intersection space.
Google Maps street view shows it painted yellow in 2023. The town needs to get busy and repaint it.
Did you stop in the middle of the road to take the picture? At least it achieved its purpose of slowing you down.
Yeah it’s not a traffic road and is entirely deserted after school drop off times.
After probably getting thrown like a bronc rider, bottoming out on it, blowing their shocks out, and shaking every screw loose in the vehicle, I’d like to document the crime too.
That badly designed road that invites speeding in the first place. Design it well, you won’t need speed bumps
Never expected to see a clemmons neighbor posting on Lemmy tbh
Oh wow, I was just wondering the other day if anybody from NC was on Lemmy. Didn’t expect somebody from Clemmons! Howdy neighbor!
Get doxxed nerd
lol seriously. I think it’s entirely possible to follow the breadcrumbs and find anyone in person in this current landscape and with the level of technology available, especially to governments.
Pwned
I feel like this is a milestone interaction for Lemmy. Used to be surprisingly common on Reddit, but I don’t think I’ve even seen it here before…
I might be guessing incorrectly, but it feels like users here don’t post personal pictures as much (for a variety of good reasons). So this kind of recognition isn’t as common.
Some of the local communities are more bustling than others though!
You’re right, I’m pretty sure we’re all here for some level anonymity.
more infuriated by them being called speed bumps while making you slower?!?! wtf
If they would make the bumps go with the road you’d be able to just take your hands off the wheel and the road would keep you in the groove. Real shame the way these so called ‘speed’ bumps have been implemented.
ikr or if not grooves make them at least jumpable.
In my experience those are typically shown with blinking arrows giving you a temporary speed boost as well.
They call them speed breakers in India, and I think that is a better name.
Its only camouflaged for like 15 mins per day. Only when the sun stands exactly like that.
Exactly at school drop off times
A shitty speed bump, but you’ll be fine because you don’t drive too fast, do you?
Yeah but diving slow is not the same as crawling over a speed bump. I’m used to this road after so many years, but I’ve always wanted to post it here.
Try hitting one of those at 25mph.
Sometimes speed bumps are pretty bad even when you drive under the limit.
Drive around mexico and these things are everywhere. Called topes. Really wakes ya up when you hit one going forty mph lol
Looks like a pretty standard sausage type speed bump, maybe a bit worn?

Is it painted grey or something?
No, it’s yellow, blending perfectly with the sun rays during school drop off times
Ooh, I see the mildly infuriating part now. Just nature being nature, not that they maliciously tried to hide it! 😅
