Get good at things.
The vast majority of our economy is an economy of convenience, taking money in exchange for doing the little things we don’t want to. The thing is, most of us have never stopped to check if we actually don’t want to do those things. Meanwhile, all the benefits of doing those things are being reaped for profits by assholes.
Get out there and get good at something, then find other people that are good at things, and help each other out.
And for those of you taking this as your sign to finally do it there are so many video tutorials online that make it easy, but there’s also still a lot of crafts clubs and old people with knowledge willing to share it. Legit walk into a cloth store and ask the older ladies working there questions, most of the time you’ll get answers. Ask your uncle or grandpa or whoever is handy around you.
Fuck, ask me! If I can do it I will teach!
No I mean… I could totally look up how to make a home… But I’d required a permit otherwise it won’t pass inspection and will have be demolished
And you can look up how to apply for a permit, and how to meet code, and the exact point you can get to before a tradesman is uncomfortable signing off on it for $50 and a plate of brownies.
Yeah, a house from scratch on your own is a stupid task. Even before all this nonsense that was a community project so taking that from my argument is like assuming I told you to make your own economy to escape this one.
On the other hand, doing a good job to restore a shitty building on the creep isn’t that big an ask. This year I get to use salvaged wood, stolen gravel, and Walmart brand power tools to lift and level the floor in my house because the previous owner wanted it off the ground and didn’t take the time to put enough support under it. Few days in a crawlspace and the cost of pizza and beer to save $20k plus materials and I get to make sure the job is overdone instead of underdone.
If you ever find yourself in a similar situation, or you need to know how to do taxes, or restore/construct furniture, or need something very niche constructed out if salvaged parts, hit me up and I’ll help for pizza and the support of the community. If all of us know some things and help each other, we can all make it out together.
I quit the office job and now I do music. I’m surviving on a tiny fraction of my old income, but I’m much happier.
😭 I wish I was good enough in music to do that
honestly you probably are. i only made decent money doing music before i started focusing on it (the instrument i play, if you want to get paid for it you have to live in New Jersey. i made more doing sax but it’s not what i’m good at)
for me, it’s that folk where i live conflate physical and mental disability. as soon as my disability became visible, the wage people were willing to pay dropped by 2/3. i figured if i’m going to starve, i might as well have fun
I’m hoping that we make the guillotine great again but in the meantime I have some animals, I made friends with my local murder of crows and a garden
Library has better entertainment than the stuff I pay for, so I’ve got that going for me.
I hope people will stop consumering. I hope they will start filling up green spaces again. Go for walks, talk to the people thy run into. Hopefully kids will go run around outside again.
Enjoying the life we have is a luxury most people in history never got and it was anomalous that we got to witness the end of that era at all.
Now it is time to buckle up for the reversion.
Most people in recorded history, perhaps.
Recorded history is a tiny fraction of human history, and of course we used to live radically different lives before civlisation came a knockin’.
what i currently do now? continuously lower my expectations and try to be grateful for what i have
it sounds bitter lol but honestly it’s made me a more content, less materialistic person
I have been very poor, homeless, middle class and everything in between. As long as you can get a job (and here, you can always get a job of some sort) all things are possible as long as you can stuff enough wage earners into your household.
I like roller coasters and Busch Gardens usually does a buy one ticket, come back all year thing, there’s a bus that comes from near me to near there. So that’s some cheap fun (I don’t buy anything there, don’t stay all day, go early, ride, leave before big crowds)
Have gotten pretty good at gardening so if there’s a yard there is some fresh food.
Lots of roommates, built in network.
Library books. Free concerts downtown. Whatever free events.
Just an FYI. I don’t know if they do it anymore, but one of my Exes and I would buy a single season pass to King’s Island the November before the next season. The reason we did this is that we would pay $70 for that pass and gold parking lot privileges. That would get us a second pass for free. Those two passes allowed us in all of the next year, with free parking, and up to two free guests per visit. It also included many other parks, such as Busch Gardens, King’s Dominion, and Knott’s Berry Farm, IIRC. This was back in the '00s-'10s
Hanging out with friends and pooling our resources to have a good time.
I’m saving a little but also just buying what I want if I can. Not worth hoarding money thats going to be worthless in a few years.
Survive…idk. Being a prepper hoarder isnt worth the stress. I’ll just be a nomad and eat trash if it comes to that
How does one afford a nomadic lifestyle? Especially without transportation?
Traditionally, nomads weren’t flush for cash.
I won’t travel. I’ll probably keep my Internet addiction. Maybe I’ll grow my hair out again?
Pinball, but I’m to broke to afford a real table so pinball fx it is. Sometimes fishing. And as much sex with wife I can
Bump for Sex with this guy’s wife!
Try to survive as long as possible and enjoy simple things.
Scientific Socialism, thats how.
