For so long we have always referred back to Nazi Germany as the last massive fascist and authoritarian takeover, but with America at the gates ready to go full fascist, the Germans must atleast be relieved that in a few years we will be talking about MAGA America instead of Nazi Germany.

W for the Germans I suppose.

Glad it was already said, and by an actual German no less!

I was going to say “If I know Germans, they’re not happy. They’d rather leave fascism in the past and not have it exist anywhere. Also, whatever new government exists in the future, they’d like it to be really efficient, but also have triplicate paperwork. Which is somehow filled out easier than most single sheet forms.”

But then you came in, and summed up everything I was going to say.

Except those Germans who still think being a Nazi is great. Of which there’s a whole Eastern Germany worth of.

Yeah, this whole thought process is such an american way of thinking and an image of what’s wrong with the US.

This is not a popularity contest in high school.

In contrast germans are terrified whats happening in the US because they are much more aware of their past and clearly see the analogies and what all this can lead to.

Actually as a german it does feel pretty shitty to see fascism rise in America and all around the world…

Even here in Germany the far right is growing stronger and it feels like history repeating.

I’m gonna guess that most Germans aren’t actually viewing the situation as a zero-sum game. So no, I don’t think the US breaking bad is going to make Germans happier, in general.

They are, Germans today don’t fuck around with that, they punish it heavily like the US should have.

They really don’t amd honestly never did. Less people were punished at nuremburg than there were guards at Auschwitz. Many nazis got domestic government positions within years of the Paris Peace treaties and some got greater european positions of power like Chairman of the NATO Military Committee. Not to mention the many Nazis who were taken in by the US including the Butcher of Lyon who got a position with the US intelligence services where he hunted communists and taught torture. These days the AFD with direct nazi ties and explicit fascist ideology is doing great. Germany was never actually de-nazified

The Americans DID punish fascism severely. My grandfather stormed the beaches on D-Day. He lost his best friend from grade school. They were barely out of high school.

As for the Americans of today? I don’t consider maga to be American. Just like I don’t consider confederates to be Americans.

Yeah, like why should we germans even be bothered by US Americans talking about Nazi Germany? We talk about it even more ourselves anyways.

No, I imagine Germans are not happy. I imagine they’re as sad as anybody that America failed to learn from Germany’s mistakes. Only the extremely selfish and narcissistic would go “hey my country looks better now because another country is committing atrocities”

I think Putin and Netanyahu are a lot further along on this path. We will be spoiled for choice of places to refer back to.
