“Female” instead of woman or girl.

Edit: as in, where “woman” or “girl” would be grammatically correct. e.g. “a lot of females work at that company” vs “a lot of women work at that company” or “that company has a lot of female employees”

    “I’m a patriot!”

Okay so, 1) I wasn’t questioning your patriotism until you said that. And 2) with zero exceptions, everyone I’ve ever heard say that turned out to be a Christian nationalist.

I think “patriot” is one of those titles that should only be given, and that ideally happens to someone who’s done something especially heroic or monumental for their country. I think of myself as patriotic, because I care a lot about my country despite its enormous, gangrenous flaws. I want to help it realize its potential. But to say “I’m a patriot” these days – I agree with you – really only connotes blind nationalism.

I would sympathize with this one, honestly.

I think we all (in the US at least) grew up with a very skewed and generalized / propagandized version of its history, one that’s specifically designed so we identify proudly with it. (I’d imagine most countries are similar on that last bit but idk)

The more time goes on, the more atrocities come to light, the more insanely layered and nuanced and complicated it all is, it’s quite an overload with everything else we have to deal with as adults. (Especially when most of it is crap we can’t even do anything about.)

The constant realizations that approach closer to the truth are often painful. Nobody likes realizing they were lied to so much in their formative years.

Yeah, I too would like if my country was run by virtuous people trying their best, and if unknown badass action heroes stopped the bad guys, instead of living in an evil empire run by those bad guys, and if hard work actually meant something.

We used to joke like this because it was such a dead giveaway that someone was racist. We started saying things like “I’m not racist but the weather is fantastic today!” Or “I’m not sexist, but do you think it’s gonna rain?”

This one can be fun to mess with, just taking it to a completely arbitrary place.

‘I’m not a racist but I had a salad for lunch yesterday.”

“I’m not a racist but at some time later this week I need to take my car in for an oil change.”

“I’m not a racist, but I think Family Guy used to be a lot funnier than it has been recently.”

One time I said “oh I don’t get involved in politics” by which I meant, “I don’t organize with any particular party” (which was the context). But I think about that all the time and hope they did not think what I always think when people say they are apolitical.

I’m very political, I just generally prefer non-partisan work.

I treat this one with a grain of salt, because its very good at some things and utterly fucking useless at others.

I needed to know what company made the gearbox in a certain car. No matter what I searched in 3 different search engines all I could find was people wanting to sell me stuff for the gearbox or gearboxes. I spent an hour before I asked ChatGPT and it immediately spat out “The gearbox is a 4l80 produced by Aisin transmissions” which I then spent some time verifying. At the core if search engines hadnt been enshitified, ChatGPT would be nothing more than a novelty. But because they have, its a sometimes useful tool that anyone with half a brain verifies.

If you treat it like gospel, yeah… your an idiot.

That’s the thing though. If someone has used chat gpt to find information and then spent the time to verify it independently, they rarely, if ever, start a sentence with “I asked chat gpt…”.

The ones that say that usually just stop at the first response they get from it. Even if what they say ends up being correct, you now know that they’re the kind of person that’ll blindly believe an LLM.

yes!! I was setting up Lyrion Music Server and I’m kind of an idiot, so when I had a specific question about that I asked a clunker. There’s very little documentation or discussion about it (weirdly, it’s awesome) so it was extremely helpful. But yeah for the most part I don’t use it.

I think a big problem is the info is out there, but they are awful at search. They still think Google is good. In today’s world you need 3 different search engines and also asking folks in the fediverse helps a lot if my issues.

But people want to go to the orphan crushing machine bot to ask it questions, because its easier.

We never needed llm slop for this. We needed a non corporate greed driven search and educated populace (now THERES a good joke!!)

TBF nobody does the 2 party system quite as 2 party as the Americans. At first I was inclined to agree with you and disagree with OP, but the more I think about Canadian politics the less enlightened centrism I see… Just conservative doofuses who view the world through tik tok.

Centrism as it exists in its colloquial form often ends up referring to a bridge between Republican and Democrat ideas—both American parties. As the other comment said, no one two-party-systems quite like the US.

Blame the military. In the 1980s to 2000s, probably up through 2010ish that’s all that was ever heard “that’s not a woman, that’s a Female Soldier”. It literally got drilled into a lot of heads.

The point is/was that soldiers are not male or female when in uniform … they are just soldiers.

Dont throw “fascist” around so much, it makes you sound like a NPC bot and the word literally loses its bite.

The older generations use the word female literally (as in by textbook definition) to describe a subjects gender. As examples; “The dog is female, there was a female police officer there, we could have had the first female president”. The younger generation wants to get offended by the usage of a clinical term. All in all its pretty fucking dumb … they should direct that energy into getting offended by billionaires tampering in politics.

It is hyperbole. The conservative “fascist” movement will be in your area soon. Its trying to spread everywhere. Racism is a very appealing to stupid people and it is being used by corporations as a rallying cry to spread rampant capitalism.

I have a friend who says this and every time I’m like “when did anyone on the left do anything close to as bad as ____” (DOJ lying constantly, trump saying officials who oppose him should be executed, etc) and every time he says “well if they’re doing that that’s pretty messed up but the left does bad stuff too.”
