Ohhh hand of glory reference; that’s some solid old school necromantic wish magic. Ah fair New England, gotta have more damned men hung to turn them hands into candles of their own fats.
As someone who has lived in New England for the last 30 years, I have to tell you that that description is bullshit.
The old man who runs the dump keeps his hand of glory in a Red Sox glass. The Bruins mug belongs to his son.
Welcome to our world. You might find, like me, that once you get here, you never leave.
The motel california
I am reading It right now and is it only me that thinks the sexualization of the 11yo is kinda awkward?
Contrapoints needs to make a 6 hour video essay about this
It’s the type of thing that worked better preInternet when you would have just kinda skipped past it then never brought it up in public.
While some may disagree and argue it was more of a train situation, a gangbang was a core plot of It.
[off topic?]
There’s a scene at the start of ‘Apocalypse Now’ where Martin Sheen gets drunk in a Saigon hotel room and practices Tai-Chi.
When I saw it, I thought it was complete Hollywood bullshit.
They did a 20th Anniversary doc about the movie and interviewed a bunch of veterans.
One authentic CIA operator said that getting drunk and doing Tai-Chi was exactly the sort of thing Sheen’s character would have done.
Also he was actually drunk, he actually punched a real mirror, and really cut himself.
Everyone in that movie was high as balls the entire time.
Because they were miserable. Let’s follow one of the most demanding film makers in the world, into one of the least hospitable places in the world, where there is no law enforcement in the 70s. That’s a recipe for drug use.
Very method
Life is the crummiest book I ever read. There isn’t a hook. Just a lot of cheap shots, pictures to shock, and characters an amateur would never make up. Sometimes truth is stranger than fiction.
That just sounds like a bad religion
Lovecraft was from New England too and wrote about some pretty weird shit happening up there too.
H. P. Lovecraft wrote about ghouls, canine-human hybrid creatures that lived in tunnels underneath Providence and raided graves to devour dead human flesh and bones.
When I visited my uncle in Providence, he casually mentioned the native coyote population, which lives in burrows in the side of the hill under the old cemetery.
So there are literally dog creatures tunnelling under the graves in Providence, and I wouldn’t be the slightest bit surprised if old Howard Phillips once saw one with a bone in its mouth, and immediately ran to his typewriter to write about the unspeakable horror of it all.
I love Pickman’s Model. I feel like it doesn’t get brought up enough when talking about Lovecraft. I think it would be perfect for an adaptation (Night Gallery wasn’t bad though) and/or expanded stories in the same setting
You think his writing is fucked up, you should see what he named his cat.
Someone made a game about that. https://store.steampowered.com/app/3912580/NECRONOMICAT/
I love me Stephen King. Especially the old drug fueled shit. Make me want to move there.
I have to admit that in this very specific case drugs and achool were awesome. His work was incredible!
“Art should disturb the comfortable and comfort the disturbed”
Drugs and alcohol disturb you, which means that 1. They make you more likely to make art and 2. They technically qualify as art themselves if you are comfortable before you use them
I don’t know why he’s so good. His plots were stupid and his characters are 1 dimensional, but the books were great.
He’ll have a plot like “An old polaroid camera always prints a picture of a mean dog, with the dog getting closer to the camera each shot” and somehow it ends up being a good read?
Not everything up here is creepy.
The fall is really nice. And they only found a chopped up body in the pond that one time in the spring. Though fall leaves are a lot to clean up.
Just mow the leaves a few times. It’s supposed to be good for the soil.
Get a mower with a twin blade stack. Mine turns leaves into powder.
It being in the usa is a big nono
That’s not so bad I guess. There’s only a few ponds up there right?
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lakes_Region_(New_Hampshire)
Yeah, a few (994).
Humans been around for several hundred thousand years, that’s not that much.

Wait fuck that’s backwards
Shit, backwards or not I laughed my ass off, out loud. Thank you for that.
Where I live yea only like a few hundred in my area. I live south of Maine though and go up there to hike a lot and they do have quite a bit of water. Ive only seen two fully wrecked planes that are too deep for anyone to clean up and one ghost train. Oh yeah and theres the failed logging equipment in the middle of old growth, thats always fun to run across. The ice breaker train thing in the logging museam in Patten is real cool. Thats all north of Stephen King though. He’s all fancy in a real town n shit.
You can stop selling me. I’m in. There’s probably a million planes, 2 is nothing.
If you’re a hiker the one one from the 70s in right in the middle of the 100mi. The other other is from the 50s, a huge aluminum thing you can walk through that crashed in the mountains in the fog. A bit off trail and takes a while to find. Its like a week or two south of the 100mi if I remember correctly? Theres more ive heard of of but not seen. Ghostrains are just on alltrails theres a few.
One of my favorites is Christine. What if a car were, like, super evil or whatever?
I had a car like that
Hopefully not too much like that. Christine had a significant body count.
TIL what a Hand of Glory is.
They really thought those girls in Salem were the only witches???
Thanks for telling us what it is.
Me coming here hoping someone in the comments would explain
It’d be easier to assume you wouldnt find it and to give a cursory web search
Well that’s no fun.
For reals! I’m already here, I don’t want to have to go all the way over to there… I wanna stay reading comments from strange, wonderful people!
Plus a bunch of people will look at the thread, so one of them googling it and explaining saves a bunch of other people googling, and saves them all more time in total than the one person spent.
Yeah. We need the group participation. Out there is just AI and ads.
I’ve somehow made friends with a crow. It comes and sits outside the window in the morning, when I go to the bathroom first time. I haven’t been nice. I guess I’ve said hello a couple of times, but only 2 or 3.
I’m working on making friends with a local murder. Four of them have gotten used to showing up in the mid-afternoon and cawing loudly until I come out and toss them some peanuts.
I’m trying to attract them closer, and it’s working. I’m hoping to be hand feeding them in a few weeks.
If you’ve a fishing shop near you that’ll sell you a tub of mealworms, then you could make a new best friend…?
I started a story recently about an animal lover who accidentally angers the mother crow living outside his apartment and gets blacklisted.
My parents live not too far away away from him. They always tell me when someone sees him at the supermarket. Apparently he is spooky.
Same. They also told me his neighbor was a prick, and when he pissed him off King would line up small rocks on is lawn and drive over them with his lawnmower to launch them towards the neighbor’s house. Can’t comment on the veracity, but it somehow feels like something he would do imo.
The writer John Connolly’s “Charlie Parker” books are partly about how weird Maine is. Some of his descriptions can get your small hairs standing up.
I thought his thing was Maine?
ok that’s just cheating
