New Samsung Origami phone. Each fold is a new dimension of value!
Fold your phone in to a paper plane to enter airplane mode. It won’t stop you from receiving calls, but it will look badass when your $2000 Samsung phone makes it several feet down the cul-de-sac
Damn, I misunderstood. I thought the airplane fold was just to increase the aerodynamics when you need to throw your on-fucking-fire phone because Samsung somehow found a way to hold the distinction of designing the first phone banned on flights across the globe due to catching on fucking fire. Imagine how cool that burning airplane (phone/firework hybrid) looks though!
Continues to baffle me that Samsung did their damnedest to go out of business with making all sorts of shit catch on fire for a few years and everyone went “meh, it’s shiny tho”
In order to call your mom, you have to:
Pick a color
Pick a number
Pick a number
Pick a number
No, not that number, Nora just did that and it’s not funny to get the same one twice
Okay, 1, 2, 3, 4, 5… Flips open page
You’re a turd
Wanna try again?
I had a folding phone back in the day. I think they’re called feature phones now. I preferred it over my Nokia because it was harder to accidentally call someone or make weird noises.
Can’t wait to go full circle (literally) and have a fully flexible scroll phone 📜
Oh I want to open a scroll like that dramatically
No sane person buys a foldy phone, unless they completely fix the issue of it breaking because it got folded.
Anecdotal of course, but my flip phone has been great for mental ver a year, and my friend has had his for a couple, but ymmv
2 years on a foldable with no broken screens. It’s been a few years from the cracked screens.
I’m on my second foldy with no issues, first was 0g Pixel Fold and now the Pixel 9 pro fold
did you replace it, if you had no issues?T-Mobile has a Jump upgrade program, basically, you take a phone out on a 2 year Equipment Installment Plan where the cost is split on a monthly basis for 2 years.
After the 1st year, you can do a Jump upgrade, you get a new phone and as long as the phone your jumping from is in decent condition you send it back, and they wipe the remaining year off.
I average Jumping every year, the only time I stopped was when I was on a OnePlus 8T because they stopped selling their phones on T-Mobile, no other phone excited me except foldys but at the time it was only Samshits ridiculously skinny versions so I waited an extra year for the (at the time) rumored 0G Pixel Fold to drop.
Then I resumed my yearly upgrades to the 9 pro Fold and will again for the Pixel 10 Foldy (unless another root-friendly competitor starts selling on T-Mobile)
If you don’t keep a device for at least 5 years you have no real basis to talk about its issues though, like of course it’s fine when it’s basically brand new the whole time you have it

Glad we’re finally moving away from the featureless black rectangle era, might even pick up a foldable once the price drops.
Right‽ Lmao, for years:
Everyone: The slab is so boring! Why can’t they just innovate!
Holly shit, I didn’t know that interrobang symbol existed in utf-8.
Uhm aktshually 🤓 utf-8 is an encoding, you mean Unicode.
(sorry)
yes, my mistake.
I like innovation, but i had 15 different people in my circle with a folding phone from Samsung and they all had constant issues.
Innovation does need to be good imo.
Which fold iteration was that on? It is after all, a screen that folds in half, there are bound to be kinks. But I feel as those major kinks have been mostly worked out. At least on the Pixel foldy series, I can’t speak for Samsung because I hate Samsucks, but they’re on what the 7th iteration now? Most major issues should have subsided
Wheels are so boring! Why can’t they just innovate?!
Phone case manufacturers just now figuring out good design for “Traditional” foldy devices
Source? I have a folding phone and every case I’ve seen or used is super frustrating
Which one? I have a Poetic Spartan for my Pixel 9 pro fold and it’s been fantastic, I don’t even use the stupid adhesive strips lol
9 Fold also. The case I have had the same basic design as the Poetic Spartan, and the hinge feels like it’s going to break sooner or later
Ah, you should pickup a Poetic, I’ve been using them for years now, long before foldy phones. This case is absolutely solid and it’s taken and protected on at least 10 falls so far lol
And the hinge is solid to, I tend to play with the hinge by holding it and let the heavy part of the phone flap around whenever I get bored, so it’s definitely of high quality
Thanks, I’ll keep that in mind when my current case fails
Pretty soon we’re going to be carrying cubes in our pockets
Or just use a normal phone that costs third as much. Or just use a pocket laptop if thats what you need because those can run linux and windows.
See
I have a foldy phone, I’m never going back.
if you want bigger screen just buy tablet…smh
I did, multiple times, sooo many times in all manner of price points, sizes, brands and even OSs (I’ve got fucking Windows tablets WITH cellular FFS just chilling in archive). Do you know what happened to them? They started collecting dust within a couple weeks
I don’t want to carry multiple devices, even when I do want to I can never get the habit to stick, so I never have the tablet when I need it the most
My foldy phone solves that issue immediately, it’s a phone when I need a phone and a tablet when I need a tablet.
Having a separate device for me, that I don’t use all the time, is never going to stick, even if it is pocket sized. I always have my phone on me because I always use it, and now it can become a tablet when I need it too
Hmm maybe its just not something i would ever need. I guess i spoke for others without considering that.
I like my phones like my katana: folded one bazillion times for superior durability
Why have just one additional failure point when you can have two?
are we gonna get into the more folds = better logic now?
Cases are for sckrubs, you already have a clamshell that protects your device.
Not as protected as a DS, but good enough.
For those with Samsung folds (4,5,6) that want a solid phone case that has the ability to just barely stick on a magsafe sticker, look here. I’m in Taiwan but you guys can probably find it in America somewhere. It’s a Korean brand.
I have dropped my phone from a moving motorcycle going 45mph and the phone was not damaged. I have used this brand case for 3 Fold generations.
The link goes to a Taiwan’s ebay equivalent. No affiliate link. Just wanted to share my experience with a amazing case.
Edit: sorry link wasn’t working.
Here is an image of it. I’ll also try and find it on Amazon for the US folks.

Not working, asks for an account
Oops sorry, let me just get a screen shot of it.
I don’t know why people bother to buy foldable phones, if you want bigger screen just buy tablet…smh…
Tablet has bigger screen plus it’s cheaper than buying foldable phonesTablet doesn’t fit in my pocket.
Buy a larger pocket. Easy.
Time to bring the JNCO’s back
I absolutely miss the unlimited fuck outta those very useful pockets, goddamn those jeans were just too good for the market. Fuck, my shorts had deepass pockets with a smaller little pocket on the outside for shit like your wallet or w/e
og jncos were just too good for us fuck 😭

I’m just curious
Does the screen vertical folding bulge area (idk if it has its own name) somehow get in the way during day-by-day usage?
Do you mean the crease? Nah, I hardly notice it, I used to feel it when sliding my finger across one side to the next like to drag and drop things, but after awhile I stopped noticing that to
Do you have one of those who fold along the longer side or the shorter one?
I have the book-style pixel 9 pro fold.
The clam-shell style is truly a gimmicky nostalgia-grab IMO
Why have a phone with a screen? Just use your computer if you need it, smh 🤦
Why have a phone at all? Just ask a friend to use theirs if you need it 🤷♂️ or maybe write a fucking letter for once? Damn kids…
Why have a friend at all?
going to my basement
Why have a computer when you can just use one at the library? smh
Why use a computer when you can just wander, naked and fearless, back into the forest from whence we came. Climb a tree. Make a nest of leaves. Screech “Ook Ook!” to let everyone know this is your tree now.

I only contact people via my QRP rig, CW mode. Don’t talk to me unless you have a valid HAM licence.
Bigger screen and fits in my pocket.
I guess you have to try one. I got a samsung fold 3, i loved it. Then, when my contract ended, i got a fold 6. I would have a hard time going back to a standard phone tbh.
My wife said she wouldnt get a folding phone but when i got my fold 6 i offered her my fold 3. She ended up really liking it and wants to get a newer fold when her contract ends.
So theres me, who knew i wanted one and am happy with it to the point where i cant go back. And my wife, who didnt want one but after trying one for a few weeks, said she got it now and would be upgrading to a newer fold when the time comes.
They need to get these in peoples hands if they want to sell them better.
Btw, getting a phone on contract is usually more expensive than getting the phone and the contract separately.
Esit: seems a more Europe thing.
But i dont have £1700 to hand to buy it outright and buying on finance direct from samsung cost more than half what i pay on my contract per month. The contract is with o2 and they offer a separate airtime and phone plan. They are independant of one another. It would have cost more to buy separate with the airtime plan i have and the discounts i applied and extras i got for free with this particular contract.
If you don’t have those 1700£ to buy it outright maybe you shouldn’t be using a 1700£ phone and focus on saving up
I dont think that’s fair to say. Would you apply the same logic to a house or a car?
Of course, i could pay for this phone in a single month, but then i wouldn’t have enough for gas or electricity for my home. Or to pay for my car, or for food or anything i might need that month.
Even the biggest companies in the world borrow to pay for things. Spreading the cost is a perfectly acceptable and legitimate way to pay for something.
I save for other things. I have my bills, and i have my savings.
Whilst i appreciate the financial advice, i would prefer a less matter of fact approach to calling me irresponsible
Personally I apply that logic to everything except a house (so I hopefully can afford a house one day)
Sorry if it came across rude, didn’t mean it like that
No, thats fair. I struggle to figure out when so.eone is being confrontational even irl.
I think its a good standpoint to have, saving to buy is a good way to stay out of debt. The only downside is when it comes to buying a house, if you dont have a credit history, then you might fail the credit checks because theres no proof you can stick to repayments.
Things like phone contracts and bills help with that. It may even be worth getting a credit card to pay for groceries and then paying back the credit card with your wages each month, with the money you would have spent on groceries anyway, just to build your credit score.
I dont use saving on phones. I use them on car and house repairs. On my kids clothes etc.
But you do you, and I’ll do me. Im managing just fine and im not poor (at least not relative to other people in my circles) (obviously most people are poor, its all about perspective, but thats neither hear nor there)
Here in the US, it’s not, carriers do Equipment Installment Plans as the new “contract” but they’re all 0% interest for the most part, so it just the outright price of the phone broken across 24 months (or the option of 36 on AT&T iirc)
I don’t use a foldable phone… But you can’t put a tablet into your pocket. It’s meant to be the dimensions of a phone, just much thicker, so it fits into your pocket, while letting you fold it out to have double the screen size. For all the issues they have, that’s a very reasonable and somewhat appealing feature.
I have the same question about tablets. A tablet to me is like a laptop without anything good about a laptop.
I exclusively use my tablet for writing (and at uni I almost exclusively write by hand). But for that one thing it’s awesome.
That’s cool. I could definitely see having used one for drawing if I’d had one in college, but I’m old so that wasn’t a thing yet then.
I have similar question: Why did Samsung bother with developing foldable phones? It isn’t selling as well as they thought, after all.
It did decently for a while, then better competitors came to the scene that didn’t make the asinine decision to make it ridiculously skinny and ol Sammy refuses to change course on that so sales have been falling
tablet screen size is okay, but really the people who want bigger screens should be buying tvs. not to mention they have the advantage of being cheaper than tablets. but even tv screens can only get so big. a really cost effective way to get a big screen would just be to go to a movie theater. that’s like 10 dollars(?) for 2 hours of access to a huge screen.
Word.
Phone for, uh, phone stuff, while I’m out and about. Pixel 4a, $70 on eBay.
PC and TV screen for internet.
Crappy $25 tablet for reading epubs.
Lemmy: NO! I want all my use cases on ONE device that doesn’t do any of them well!
OK, pay out the ass for it along with the associated global warming and ecosystem trashing. Oh, and the slave labor that took to produce it.
Lemmy: NO! Not like that!
Because electronics in general, including TV, PC and regular phones, aren’t associated with slave labour lmao
Also, good job on combating climate change and ecosystem trashing by not buying one device, but four of them!Imagine I want to read an epub or do some gaming, or watch a show while commuting. Do you suggest that I bring all my devices with me on the bus instead of just the foldable phone?
