People who don’t wear shoes indoors and keep their floors clean generally put their socks on in their bedroom after they got out of bed and their shoes on in the entryway when they’re about to go outside.
You know, people who don’t live like animals.
Y’all wear socks in the house?!
Yes, because I have hardwood and tile floors. Shit’s cold in the winter.
That’s what house slippers, thick socks and some good rugs are for. Even if somehow you have a special pair of shoes that you only wear inside and never outside for the obvious hygiene reasons, they are probably bad for your feet compared to walking barefoot.
That’s what house slippers, thick socks and some good rugs are for.
You can accomplish the same thing with just normal socks though. Slippers-without-socks is a sweaty stinky nightmare and with socks is just a hat on a hat, thick socks have the same sweat problem unless your springing for merino wool which is expensive (especially for something as transitory and utilitarian as socks), and good rugs are really fucking expensive and only make sense in certain parts of the house.
Also, sliding around pretending to ice skate.
How do you keep from sliding around in socks?
compression socks on right after i get up ◡̈
Do you not?
Nope, never
I rarely take my socks off when I take off my shoes (unless they’re wet). Not out of principal or anything, out of laziness. Later I might decide I don’t feel like wearing socks any more and then take them off.
But I don’t put socks on in the first place, unless I’m about to go put on shoes. If I’m not wearing socks and my feet are cold I’ll get my slippers.
When you live in a very small, uncarpeted apartment, the line between the entryway and the rest of the dwelling becomes fuzzy and permeable.
You do you. You don’t need to pass such harsh judgment on other people for what they do.
Ya freak.
IDK who downvoted you but they missed the obvious joke. Have my upvote.
Ok, you got my upvote for closing with “ya freak”
This is my Roman Empire. When I find out people live with their shoes in the house I don’t want to visit them again. Your willingness to drag the outside fecal matter on the floors of your supposedly clean house is a huge red flag about you as a person for me.
👉👈 But some of us DO live like animals…
I’m straddling the line between having my normal tech job and embodying the meme of the resume/linkedin that transitioned from Senior Architect at Microsoft to goose farmer.
That plus the AuDHD means I am deep into like 10 different projects at home, half of which involve the critters.
What can I say? Sometimes I’m a dirty boy.
sock>sock>slipper>slipper<slipper<slipper>shoe>shoe
Wet or dirty floors invite to completely dress one foot first.
This response just raises further questions!
Hiking
Even so, I will sock, step on shoe, sock, put on shoe, put on other shoe. I would never, in any imaginable circumstance, have a sock and shoe on one foot while the other is bare. That is just insanity.

It’s funny the stuff that can set people off, I can’t stand the feel of long pants and short socks. If I’m wearing long pants, my ankles have to be covered by my socks.
I could maybe see if you have high top hiking boots to go sock>insert foot in shoe BUT LEAVE UNTIED>other sock>other shoe (tying in whatever order works). I wouldn’t consider that a full “shoe” though. Like if you put the horseshoe up to the horse foot but didn’t nail it in. It’s not truly on until it’s tied.
This is the way, you can change pants and socks without sitting ^^
For me personally I change outfits several times a week in a public bathroom, so my main goal is simply to avoid letting my socks or any of my other clothing touch the floor.
Corollary to this, I actually complete one foot start to finish before moving on to the next. So at the halfway point I am fully wearing a new sock and shoe on one foot, while the other is still wearing my old sock and shoe
Changing between regular socks and shoes and the ski variant, in the car
Sock > shoe > sock > shoe > underwear > pants > shirt.
P.S. why does naked except for shoes and socks feel MORE naked then just naked?
why does naked except for shoes and socks feel MORE naked
Because it implies you will also be somewhere you need foot protection.
So does a hat go at the beginning, or between shoe->underwear?
Between first and second sock-shoe perhaps?
Are you implying I’m ever not wearing the sombrero?
One day, you will… Your knees will go and it’ll just be easier to only change your position twice rather than four times…
I put on socks long before I put on shoes. I loathe walking around barefoot.
i’ve been doing it this way for as long as i can remember… unless it’s gonna be boots instead of shoes, or if i’m not putting shoes on right away.
I do sock shoe sock shoe at the gym because I don’t want my socks on those grimey floors.
But at home it’s sock sock shoe shoe
I do sock shoe sock shoe at the gym because I don’t want my socks on those grimey floors.
See, that’s an acceptable circumstance for Sock Shoe Sock Shoe.
Yeah I do the same specifically getting in or out of ski boots in a parking lot.
Who puts on shoes right after putting on socks in the first place?
People who are putting on socks and shoes to be presentable outside of their house and have been barefoot or in sandals up to this point.
yeah but I don’t keep my socks by the door where my shoes are, they’re in my bedroom. so I put them on in my bedroom instead of carry them to the door
Same, put it all on in the closet or next to the bed, depending on current shoe location.
To go outside
People who don’t live in the cold?
Heh. Would blow their mind to see sock>sock>wool sock>wool sock>shoe>shoe.
Having cotton on the inner layer defeats the purpose of the wool though?
Not necessarily. It would be similar to cotton long John’s underneath wool pants. It just creates pockets of air. The heat comes from your foot. The extra barrier would eliminate conductive heat transfer from your foot to the wool while adding in pockets of air such transfer less heat via convective transfer. The problem would be if your foot sweats as now you’re adding in a cotton layer that will absorb that moisture and reduce its insulating properties.
But when it’s not cold there’s no need for socks?
My socks are in my bedroom and my shoes are by the door because I’m not a savage who tracks shit into my home. Am I supposed to just carry socks around while I get my shit together to go out?
I’m barefoot cause house is where no shoes. I wear socks cause I wear shoes, and for no other reason. Why I would put them on before I’m leaving?
You must live in a warm area, have a very well isolated house, or have heating in the floor. If I’d do they here for 70% of the year my feet will be way too cold to be comfortable
Nah, bruv. I live in a cold place. But I’ve got the no socks 'tism
Understandable haha
Socks+rugs and carpets make cold floor a non-issue, and it now gets to -40 for a week or so every winter here so I certainly wouldn’t call it a warm place (though most summers it’ll get as high as 90F at 100% humidity)
Archie Bunker got very upset when he saw his son-in-law doing sock, shoe, sock, shoe. The son’s closing argument was along the lines of, “What if we’re both halfway done and there’s a fire, so we have to run outside? The fire department is spraying water all over. Your feet get soaking wet because you’re in your socks. But I have one shoe on, so I can hop and stay dry.”
Had to dredge that memory up from the deep archives.
Or, in this case, the Archieves.
That scene (on YT) is linked elsewhere in the thread.
Mike! That was his name. All I could remember was Meathead lol.
Depends on the environment. When camping, in a tent without a floor, putting on each shoe right after the sock allows parking the shoed foot on the dirt while putting on the next sock and shoe.
But putting on both socks and then putting on both shoes is the default.Camping is almost always a sock shoe, sock shoe. That way you keep your feet clean and your shoes out of the tent
Sock shoe sock shoe is only valid when you’re on a dirty floor (eg a beach), hopping around awkwardly on one foot, trying to stay as clean as possible
Or in a locker room
I do sock shoe sock shoe if I’m drying/cleaning my feet from a trip to the beach or for hiking a canoe portage.
Special circumstance. Usually I’d assume putting on socks and shoes has so much temporal and spacial separation that sock, shoe, sock, shoe is impractical.
I put my sock inside my shoe and wear them both together in a smooth motion.

I can smell this picture.
Socs? Crocks?
That’s impressive skills
Thank you for saving me the search. Also, we’re old. 👍
Glad this was already here. I’m not quite that old but the classics are classic for a reason. Almost one more month til Rob’s been gone for 6 months and the 25th anniversary of Carroll O’Connor’s death as well.
doesn’t mean you are old. The show is great. I only discovered it like 5-10 years ago.
Another thanks. I remembered it and loved it.
Apparently it was improvised by the two of them.
Sandal, sandal. I don’t like my feet to be hot.
Sock sock sandal sandal
You monster!
Sandal people unite!
My sister does sock-shoe to limit the amount of dog hair on the sock.
but any dog hair on the sock is dog hair i don’t have to vacuum up.
But then it gets in the shoes.
It always did bother me a little the the inside of shoes is basically impossible to clean well. The best you can do is throw them in the washer if they’re not made of leather and that still doesn’t do well.
But the inside of my shoes is a lost cause :) Hell the Roomba looked at me yesterday and said “I’m Tired Boss”
If the inside is leather you can wipe them out with a damp cloth
ouside leather, inside open cell foam and fabric bacteria soup.
Maybe try exorcising
The trick is limiting the amount of dog that loses hair. This process takes time.
I do the same, but to limit dog hair building up in my workout shoes. I’m also technically swapping from one pair of socks to another, so my workout socks never actually touch the floor.
