I had a run in in the drive thru a couple years back. I pulled into one of the two lanes at McD, and another car went through the second lane. I wait my turn, and then try to pull forward, but the person in the other car was riding up on the bumper of the person ahead of them, like, clearly intentionally making sure there was no room for me to take my turn.
So I roll down my window and call out “Hey, they’re gonna get our orders mixed up” and before I’d even finished my sentence the driver GOES BALLISTIC on me. Just screaming “oh my God, really? Really?? Over a burger? Really?? Really? Really??” And I just rolled my window back up. The person drove forward just far enough to keep me from moving ahead, but not far enough to get to the first window to pay. They waited. Waited until the line cleared up. Then they gunned it past the pay window and straight to the food window.
I pulled up to the pay window, rolled mine down and loudly declared “Yeah, could I get my receipt too? I think this person ahead of my is trying to take my food!”
At which point the driver ahead of me peeled out of the drive thru without having received any food.
Window person said that such a tactic had been done a few other times that month by other people.

McD is the kind of place where they would say “Tough shit, re-order” as well. That’s why I stopped going like a decade ago.
Would have been hilarious if they slid into a curb while peeling out and got stuck because their wheel got fucked up.
I was driving back from Atlanta a few years ago and stopped into a chicfila drivethru to grab some lunch on the go. I didn’t realize how backed up they were until i was already stuck in line and had no way to get out. There were 2 parking lot entrances merging into 1 drive-thru lane, the guy in front of me let a car from the other lane go in, then he went, so I figured the understanding was zipper merging and just taking basic turns so I let the other car go, then I went. When I got to the person to take me order she said “The guy in front of you has already paid for your meal for letting them go in front of you.”
When basic courtesy is so rare it needs to be rewarded.

Same. Every day was like a lengthy masterclass in infinite fresh flavors of assholery and Karen-hood. As soon as you think you’ve plumbed the shadowy depths of the human condition, the floor comes out from under you. Then, all of a sudden, you’re gazing straight into the maw of a clapped out Chevy Trailblazer where there used to be a drive thru window, and the driver is now prancing around nude, ranting about dipping sauces and firing a 12-gauge into the ceiling tiles.
Then everyone clapped and he was crowned king and now he lives on McDonald’s Mountain.

By paying for it at the first window. He’s in front of her. He gets to pay, says “I’m paying for me and car behind me. I need both receipts please”
Goes to second window for pickup. Shows both receipts, gets given both orders.
Leaves.
And only McDonalds wins.

I assume people do not like what I say to some topics and downvote me everywhere regardless of what I say. I am fairly sure of this since some replies to me can even be as simple as “you are correct” and have 20 upvotes while I am at 4 or something. Odd but who cares at the end of the day.
In any case, if you have a car and go to these places and this happens once(!), you can clearly afford it.

The employees then say ‘this order is for a white sedan’ and then hand you your order and only your order.
McDonald’s doesn’t provide receipts at the first window, they provide them at the second along with your food.
They don’t even have a receipt printer at the first window.
The McDonalds near my house works as I’ve written. I hand them a card, they ask if I want a receipt, they hand me back my card and the receipt.

Yes. It’s how it works with most restaurants here as well. Hand it to them, they leave and return with the thing to sign and the card. Or in the case of drive throughs, the card and the receipt.
It’s weird to hear for a lot of us Europeans because most people here don’t use credit cards (so you’re out of your own money if fraud happens) and also all cards have been chip and pin for a few decades now, we don’t do this signing thing
Most cards here have the chip, I think. You mean how to put the card next to a reader and it goes beep, yeah? Those are available, but for some reason restaurants and drive through food places just…don’t do that? The only place I think that uses the tap part is something like Red Robin, a fast casual burger place. They have machines on the table you can tap. But for the most part you hand the card and the check/slip to the server, they disappear, return with a thing to sign and your card. But from my understanding it’s pretty easy to do chargebacks on the card or the like if someone were to charge extra or the like. But part of the reason for handing you something to sign is because you also can put the tip on there, being in the USA.
Yes? One of the biggest benefits of a credit card is the charge back option for fraud. (Not pro credit card… Just pointing out this feature)
I’ve definitely gotten receipts from either window I’m pretty sure. Hell sometimes you pay and receive at the same window and one window isn’t even being used.
The receipt printer is hooked up to the computer with the card swiper, which would be at the first window, in the case of my location.
I’d almost put money on the attendant asked the guy to wait a moment, then this lady honked because she had to wait in line for an extra 14.7 seconds…but when it was her turn to order she stared at the menu for 2 minutes, then ordered for more people who can fit into her car.
The same type of person at the grocery store who will complain yOuRe TaKiNg ToO lOnG if someone is looking at something she wants, but then will park her cart in the middle of the aisle and stand there for 4 straight minutes.
At my Walmart, everyone tends to be so polite, Ive unintentionally left my cart blocking the aisle until I realize why someone is standing there holding a basket. I kind of wish more people would be like “Oi! Move it!”
But why not just move it yourself? I mean the person waiting? I am not going to wait for an inanimate object that someone left in the way for various reasons.
I haven’t used a drive through in decades. How is one able to pay for the next person’s food?
Some drive thru have two windows, one where you pay and one where you pickup. So you just tell the pay window that you have your car and the car behind you.
Nowadays most places either only have one window and make one person do both jobs, also they don’t have to pay as many people. The overall service is slower, but no one seems to care enough.
Sometimes you can even find older restaurants that have two windows and one is just permanently closed.
Also Starbucks had (still has?) a trend where you pay for the car behind you as a sort of pay it forward thing. Although in that scenario you probably can’t take someone else’s food.

Often it’s actually quicker just to go inside.
When I was working fast food, during rush they prioritized the drive-thru orders over the indoor customers. Drive time was tracked and needed minimized, people waiting inside were presumably expected to be more patient.
It’s been a few decades, but I still see cars slide through a lot faster than our orders when we go in.
Yeah, but only a couple cars can have orders placed at most, so your wait time is the sum of all cars in front of you.
That’s changed now a bit, there are multi lines and they ask you to pull over and wait. But still.
It varies by restaurant, but I’ve had my family waiting in fast food restaurants, order already placed, for 15-20 minutes while I’m seeing cars entering the parking lot and leaving within four minutes or so. And it’s not like they forgot us (had that too), usually others were already there and also had to wait a while.
It’s not everywhere, but Ive seen it multiple times with multiple chains. Online pickups don’t seem to have it as bad, but drive times are absolutely prioritized over indoor wait times
But also you should have an idea what you want before you go through the drive through.
They have a menu for a reason. You don’t get to act entitled to other people’s ability to look at a menu at the restaurant to decide what they want – nor do you forfeit yours – just because you decided not to leave your stupid car to get your food. “Oh, gee, I’m wasting gas waiting for them to order.” Then go inside or order ahead.
Of course it’s made up. How does one pay for an order which hasn’t been made?
And then places will refuse to let ppl pay for the food of others because ppl like you exploited that system of goodwill to do evil. Thanks for that, making the world worse, one petty small step at a time.
