As a result, our instance https://lemmy.dbzer0.com/ got 625 new user registrations (of which 536 where accepted) in the past 24 hours! And the registrations are not abating even now. We still get like 10 new ones per hour!
I suspect this is probably the largest advertisement, for lemmy specifically, since the main reddit blackouts 1.5 years ago.
Have your own instances also seen an influx of new users?
Everyone remember to be kind to the newbies, not assume that they immediately understand how the fediverse works, and not to talk about your favourite Linux distro until the second date
Second date? I’m getting a date out of this now? Oh. Oh man. This is intense! I didn’t even know she LIKED me! Wait…I don’t even know who we’re talking about!!!
What were you saying about Slackware? Who said Slackware?
Oh please honey, you gonna scare them. Now kids, welcome to Lemmy! Take a minute to visit and make yourselves confortable. Tomorrow I’ll show you my Nobara.
Narrator: They use arch btw.
No, I said, “I like the slacks you’re wearing.” They would go nicely with a red hat.
M’lady. tips fedora
Teach them about beans.
And how to hold your poop in for a few days for… reasons.
I was there. In the ancient times.
You were there when the ancient texts were written, but remember, some of us were there when the alphabet was conceived.
Why would you go on a date with someone if you didn’t know their religious opinions (favourite init system)???
So, my second-favorite Linux distro is Arch, BTW
I can talk about Linux distros on my date? But I don’t have any dates. Oh, right.
Some supermarkets have them
Neelix, is that you?
Also maybe try not to harass them about which instance they choose to join (unless it’s a tanky one lmao), just try to educate them if the subject comes up. I think it’s overwhelming to jump right away into “this instance has this problem, you should move to this other one”
I say this still not having moved from Lemmy.world
Is there a problem with Lemmy.world? I joined this one to avoid tankies, but I haven’t gotten familiar with the place yet (despite moderating a community lol).
Besides smaller complaints (every instance has their issues). .world has gotten too large. Many people have suggested that it close its doors for now so other instances can catch up.
lemm.ee is a good general alternative to .world.
It should probably the default suggestion or selection now.
Voyager defaults to lemm.ee now
I didn’t know that. That’s really good.
Having at least one mega instance is really good, in my opinion. Whether we like it or not, many people struggle with the idea of the fediverse and how to function inside it. If they didn’t have to think about it initially it would help them and the fediverse. BlueSky and the AT protocol should never have happened IMO. But people prefer them because the experience is “better”.
It’s fine.
The occasional complaint I see is not enough that I’ve considered moving and I don’t even remember what those were. But the great thing about the fediverse is that you can move if you want!
Very dated Lemmy version. LW users still can’t remove their uploaded media
It also blocks Tor, other instances don’t
If they’re coming from Reddit, they probably expect a little negging.
The entire point of c/piracy is sharing freedom. Why would you not talk to people about Linux? (plus the torrenting tools are just so much more efficient there…)
It’s a joke on how off putting the computer nerds can be here to normies.
I mean, they’re normies… anything that’s not just a one-step process buttoned as “App” is going to give them “off putting vibe”.
And this is why lemmy can feel unwelcoming lol
Couldn’t imagine a piracy community on reddit feeling good about its future.
Reddit will literally change its rules to get rid of communities it doesn’t like. They did it with DarkNetMarkets.
Guess I am one of the 536 newbies hahahaha!
Guess I am one of the 536 newbies hahahaha!
Welcome my friend! Spread the word around. Be part of the resistance!
Yes, trying my best to spread the word!
Welcome!
We’d use Branston beans, but not gonna lie that looks shit hot. Would scran with a bottle of 8% cider.
I thought Heinz was the gold standard in the UK. I must try the Branston ones. Flippin’ love that pickle.
Don’t think I’ve ever seen them in the supermarket in Ireland but my sister’s visiting from the UK on Sunday so I think I’ll place an order.
I find Heinz beans a bit watery. I prefer the supermarket own brands to Heinz… Branston’s are much better and tastier, with a thicker sauce. Still, YMMV and all that jazz.
Oh, I forgot an annoying trivial issue: the Heinz cans don’t stack up well (lock into place with one can on top of another).
That non stacking thing annoys the piss out of me haha. It’s such a small thing and it’s deliberate to make the tin look bigger but it just means they’re taking up more space in the cupboard for lack of stacking or falling over if you do.
Also not a huge Heinz fan. Like they’re not bad don’t get me wrong but definitely agree on the watery-ness.
The most popular one here is probably Bachelor’s which has a thicker, richer sauce though I’m fond enough of the Lidl own brand one. That is definitely partly down to price. They’re ridiculously cheap and very decent with a fry especially if you warm them slowly to soften them.
I’ll have to try Bachelor’s beans the next time I see them, as well as Lidl’s own when I’m near their store.
Now, what’s this thread about? Oh, yeah, pirating beans. That’s it. ;)
There are two Lidl beans. The extra 10p for the ring pull one gets you more than just the convenience. :) Worth trying both though.
Yaaarrrrns.
So, what’s your take on all the Lemmy.ml drama? What do you MEAN you don’t know what I’m talking about??? Is this your first day on Lemmy or something? Oh, it is? Oh.
Ignore me. I’m making bad jokes.
In all seriousness, and a nutshell, is that something to avoid? Trying to learn!
WHAT’S YOUR FAVOURITE LINUX DISTRO
And why is it Arch
pshaw, NixOS, Arch is too easy.
Welcome! Happy to have you!
Welcome to Lemmy!! We are called Lemmings over here! Or whatever you want really. I may have drank too much beer.
Thank you fellow lemming!
Your username implies the existence of a lesser, regular jimboomba.
Fwiw, I prefer Fedizen, bc it works for other things too like Mastodon, Mbin, PieFed (where I’m typing this from btw), Friendica, etc.
But yeah, where you are, Lemming works too I suppose.
I like fedizen too, and threadiverse for lemmy, mbin, piefed, etc. (or when accessing the threadiverse through friendica, hubzilla, etc.)
Threadiverse does sound to me too much like Threads… but that’s dead anyway so meh, whatever, Threadiverse it is then! (Especially since iirc our usage of it predated that of Threads anyway)
And Fedizen makes me feel so… responsible? 😎
Now have a beer: 🍻😄
Hello fellow Fedizen!!!
Hello! Now let’s go grab a beer… 🍻
We are called Lemmings over here!
Lemminators
Check out phtn.app and Voyager for Lemmy (app/PWA).
Welcome! If you have any questions about the fediverse or piracy in general, feel free to post or shoot the community some questions in this thread. We’re glad you made the switch!!!
to the new users:
Ahoy, mateys
Arrrr! Welcome aboard, ye scallywags!
Thanks, a back-up in case something happens to the subreddit lol
Sadly /c/piracy is blocked from .world I think.
Yeah that and the stance towards thre*ds was what showed me that I don’t want be live on .world.
I am very much aware

What instance did you go to then? I don’t keep up on “the best” instances, or those that defederate or block certain things. I was part of kbin.social at first, then moved to .world.
- https://sopuli.xyz/ for an EU instance that blocks hexbear and lemmygrad, like LW does
- https://discuss.online/ for an USA instance that does the same
- https://lemm.ee/ for an EU instance that doesn’t block them
- https://lemmy.tody/ for a USA instance that doesn’t block them either

https://lemmy.world/post/6018317
Apparently it once was but was unblocked
Later on there was drama because they blocked it a second time anyway. xD
E: Their second announcement: https://lemmy.world/post/13320356
Announcement stands at a high number of downvotes. The people have spoken, the admins did not listen.
I don’t think I’ve ever seen any other post with 2000 downvotes and -1000 overall score. Those numbers are really big. But at the same time LW has way too many users and communities on them so I can understand them not wanting to play legal games on top of that regardless of factuality. It’s a free platform and changing instances is easy (as long you don’t have communities to move).
Tell me one single instance of .would admins not just copying reddit in terms of being a shit instance.
Yeah I got reddit flashbacks when I joined and instantly made an account at 3 other instances lol, that post in particular with the downvotes they ignored was the main influence
It does not exist.
That was a very helpful post, so I could make sure I was subscribed to all three communities listed and not just this one, lol.
Edit to add: on my instance there are communities that are hidden by default, but not blocked at all. If you subscribe to such a community, everything shows up like normal for you. It seems to me this is a better option for communities seen as controversial or problematic. And of course defederation is always an option when needed.
damn
That was reverted more than a year ago, or was it not?
nope, I just joined a month ago, and made other accoutns because of it, dbzero itself isnt blocked tho
Still can’t see it, but maybe that’s just me?
I migrated from reddit today. Thanks to r/piracy post. So far it’s amazing. I am using the Eternity app for Android which is the same as the Infinity app for reddit so UI is similar
Just a heads up, I see you joined lemmy.world , the dbzer0 piracy community that I think you may have come for is blocked there, so may not be able to access it from where you are.
I know it’s kinda confusing.
This is because lemmy.world defederated, right? So at this point would we recommend people to make a different account on an alternative server? Not a problem for those that have just joined, just delete and make a new account. But have there been any recent developments on migration tools for moving accounts to a new server while preserving account data?
No, we’re all on lemmy.world and we’re here, not fully defederated. You can get to most communities on dbzer0, it’s just that specific /c/piracy community that is blocked on world.
Thank you for the clarification!
no only those communities, you can still interact with dbzer0 users, just not the piracy communities
Account Settings (not Profile), Import/Export Settings, Export to file then repeat with Import on new instance. It transfers subscribed communities and block lists, so if none yet then no need to bother. Edit: there is currently no way to transfer over your actual content (posts, comments, likes & dislikes) and DMs sent to your old account will not follow you over to the new. The only thing you can really do then is transfer your settings to help you start over more quickly in the new place.
For piracy, lemmy.dbzer0.com might be the best, for leftist politics definitely slrpnk.net, for science mander.xyz, and so many other themes but there’s a ton of hidden factors there like uptime stats, stability via number of admins, etc.
For simplicity’s sake: a USA general instance I highly recommend is Discuss.Online, or for European sopuli.xyz.
I mean, it’s good opsec to have a separate account to talk about dicey subjects anyway. You’re leaving less breadcrumbs in the same place.
Oh, thanks for the heads up. I will make an account on a different instance. Which one do you recommend?
If you came to the fediverse for a community on dbzer0, easiest solution is to make an account on dbzer0. It’s a good instance, if you like it, think about contributing to their patreon.
Thankyou. Signed up for dbzer0
Yeah I migrated when they did the API thing. It’s quieter here, but I kinda prefer it. Welcome mate
Welcome!
My advice to newbies is to just sign up for whatever, then change later if ya need to. I think I tried 2 other instances before i found the one that fit best for me
Lemmy is very much lacking an account migration feature.
not a big deal if you’re a week or even a month in
But not .world or .ml? I got an account in both and I didn’t know those places were disliked until I started getting automatic bans only for being in those instances.
Anyway, that’s why Lemmy is so good, just figure out later where you wanna go. The first thing to really understand is that one Lemmy instance is similar to Reddit while another instance is also similar to reddit but all instances are independent of each other and Lemmy is not reddit at all.
You can have a Lemmy purely focused on sex stuff while another might be about painting or maybe another is owned by a church or a bakery. The Bakery might like the church and the sex stuff. The church one might only be federated to the bakery and painting one. Its not just that an instances can have many different channels, but each instance can have channels with specific focus. Or even an instances for your local diy business or a 18 year old who rally wants us to see what’s in between his legs. Lemmy is definitely far from what reddit is.
But not .world or .ml? I got an account in both and I didn’t know those places were disliked until I started getting automatic bans only for being in those instances.
Having to read through the entire lore of lemmy and get informed on all the instances and relationships between them seems like a nightmare. You make an account on one instances then after few days you get told that your instance is literally satan and you should switch to a different one. It’s like with Linux distros. No mater which one you pick, you chose wrong.
I am on .world and honestly I don’t care that much.
It’s defederated from the places I don’t wanna see, and I mostly look through the All feed, not the local one.
The high drama is as hilarious as it is pathetic.
And like switching Linux distros, switching Lemmy instances means losing everything unless you have an external backup.
Yep! Took two tries as well. I got banned from one because literally my second comment pissed off the mod! Im already loving Lemmy.
I got banned from one because literally my second comment pissed off the mod!
Gooble gobble one of us! One of us!
I make like 10 accounts before i found one that worked for me. Luckily i can log them all into sync for lemmy and switch between them when im doom scrolling so i can doom scroll the same content 10 times before bed!
Same. I was on Kbin, was denied at .world (not safe enough), then landed on lemm.ee.
I’m not a Lemmy admin, but from what I’m seeing, there’s been an uptick of 4,000 Lemmy registrations within the last 24 hours.
There’s now 477,048 Lemmy accounts.
Whaaaaa??? Last I heard there was like 60k Lemmy accounts total. What the fuck happened since October???
Monthly active accounts vs total accounts: https://lemmy.fediverse.observer/dailystats
Aside, looks like pixelfed is growing too?

Feel free to share if you find a better one!

You’re not the first one commenting on it, but it seems like it’s the only graph we have about those stats at the moment.
these stats areee… not the best? fuck i hope we dont fizzle, this better just be the begininng
46K active users is nothing to sneeze at. Most old school forums were hella active with just 1K
Posts and comments are on the rise!
(although the posts are all coming from like 3 people)
@The_Picard_Maneuver@lemmy.world and @MyNameIsAtticus@lemmy.world, please accept your standing ovations!
:P
Makes me smile to see people recognizing me outside of my Screenshot posts. I didn’t realize that I was known outside of the gaming community I post in though lol
Discuit has less than 200 commenters : https://discuit.net/DiscuitMeta/post/cauipqZt
Am I confused, or is that link not a forum?
One of the more commonly recommended reddit alternatives aside from Lemmy. Goes to show how far ahead we are of any other alternative, they all have virtually no activity.
Also note that we bottomed out around 37k in October 2024, so we have seen pretty significant growth since then, and it seems to be accelerating.
Is voat still a “reddit alternative”? When they launched like over 10 years ago that’s how they billed themselves. Then I think their user base was mostly conservative, which might have prevented some people from trying it.
Sorry, wrong link: https://discuit.net/DiscuitMeta/post/cauipqZt
Hi, glad I joined!
Welcome!
Hey, Welcome :-)
Welcome to Lemmy.ca! You chose well, we’ve got a pretty good admin team here.
When referring to communities on Lemmy please use the proper link format. !community@instance
Oh man, I am both happy for the instance, and sorry for you lol. I hope you find somebody soon to help with going over all those applications. I don’t envy you, to be honest.
As one of those newbies?
Hi. It is the two millionth day of September, give or take a few thousand.
I’ve noticed that every different social media medium/site has its own Eternal September moment. I think, optimistically, that we’re still before that point. If we get popular and the general population arrives, it’ll also attract the predatory ecosystem of state actors and corporate bullshit.
I think Lemmy and the Fediverse in general is resistant to that, but not immune. I expect an effort to create One Big Instance that most people use, or an oligarchy of large instances working together, like Microsoft and Gmail and co do with email.
Lemmy has a long way to go before eternal September to be sure. It’s once people don’t know individual commenters across the entire platform we might get there, but as is the regular users are unlikely to get drowned out anytime soon.
And I recognize all you motherfuckers!I mean, welcome new folks.
September beeth eternal
For the past thirty two years, and counting.
I was there at the beginning. Just a wee Luser. Such fun and wonderful times for eleven year old me to be punted into.
What the fuck did I just read?
Am I having a stroke?
Eternal September: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Eternal_September September was traditionally the time of new admissions in US collages and universitie. As a result of these institutes often being the first time many would gain access to Usenet September had areputation of clueless newbies flailing around until they either self selected out or adapted. In 1993 AOL gave their userbase Usenet access. Thus the term ‘Eternal September’ or ‘The September that never Ends.’
Luser: Portmantu of Loser and User. Used Derisively in some online communities in the 90’s to refer to new, and often clueless, users.
For anyone new: consider investing 10 minutes to learn how lemmy works and why decentralized and open source is better than proprietary and centralized platforms like reddit.
https://join-lemmy.org/docs/index.html
That’ll teach em! You can’t just sign up, first you gotta read some 20 minute long post from gnu.org
Nobody is forcing you but you should really consider investing 20 minutes in learning how lemmy is different. You may think it’s not that serious but look at where popular centralized platforms are heading to, now that bad actors are taking full control the problem cannot be ignored
I see your argument and I am playing in the same field, but in reality you will scare average users away with that kind of stuff.
I’m simply suggesting new comers to learn how this place works. If people get scared over how a software works it’s even more evidence that we need to help them understand.
But they don’t want to? What next?
It’s not much work and it’s a good investment it’s also not as bad as you may think because there’s plenty of enjoyment in learning and understanding stuff
If I had to read a 20 minute post just to doomscroll Elon and Linux, I’d just stick to Reddit. Whatever nefarious stuff they’re doing isn’t more valuable than 20 minutes of my real world time.
Whatever nefarious stuff they’re doing isn’t more valuable than 20 minutes of my real world time.
I’m not sure if you are trolling. 20 minutes is a random number we pick up it probably take even less and 20 minutes is not really much time, we waste more time doing more useless things
Are you allergic to reading ?
:motions at trillions of times people that signed up for Fb, Ig, Twit, TkTk, etc/everything without reading the Terms of Service:
A lot of people are.
When it comes to things I don’t want to read during my lunch break, yes.

Especially important to understand decentralization when it comes to topics like piracy. Unlike Reddit, a non-commercial Lemmy instance isn’t going to be shut down by a CEO who is worried about how it might affect their ability to sell ads. But, admins can get threatened, they can get overwhelmed, they can get hit by a bus. It’s good to know how how to find other communities on other servers, etc.
It’s a bit of a mixed experience. Overall, federation has its benefits, but it also tends to encourage cliquish behavior among groups. Sometimes, entire servers get blacklisted for various reasons. Reddit has a lot of corners that don’t violate its current ToS but are generally ignored by the community at large. These are NSFW spaces usually. In federation the ToS isn’t usually about pleasing the most people and pulling them into your platform, it’s more about the ideals of your server admin team. That’s a good thing, I suppose. It’ll be interesting to see how things play out with Lemmy instances when Reddit bans porn.
It’ll be interesting to see how things play out with Lemmy instances when Reddit bans porn.
Especially as many Lemmy instances don’t want to host or moderate NSFW content. I don’t blame them, but I’m also doubtful pornlemmy alone could handle the load (pun intended).
Having looked at the NSFW Lemmy instance, I 100% expect the Reddit refugees will try to host their own instances. Some of them. I also expect them to be defederated pretty quickly.
Holy shit! Nice!
And haven’t noticed instance specific influx but recently there are a lot of users posting/commenting that have the “baby badge” on Voyager app, meaning the account is new. Feel like this influx of new users already started last week.
Haven’t been on reddit since I deleted my account during the blackouts / API fiasco and man, Lemmy/Fediverse has been fun.
It’s weird how people smell babies, and are like “smell that baby! It has baby smell!”
But at some point they stop. I’m 41, and nobody ever lifts my shirt and smells me.
You just go to the wrong bars man, or so I’ve heard
https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hexadecanal
(…) In 2021, inhalation of hexadecanal was found to reduce aggression in men but to trigger aggression in women. Hexadecanal is one of the most abundant substances emitted by human babies from their heads, which may be an evolutionary survival mechanism to induce mothers to defend the baby and fathers to not attack it. (…)
What fathers are attacking babies???
remembers the world we live in
Oh, right.
Yeah but if I did do that, then somehow “I’m” the weird one… smh over here… 😜
YES I fuckin love the 👶 emoji on Voyager! There’s been a lot more and they make me smile inside like little 🌱s on FFXIV. Do other apps have them to indicate new users?
This makes me want to switch but I’m ride or die Sync. I just manually look up the account age when I see someone spewing absolute bullshit. That icon would be helpful! How long does it last?
It’s there for new accounts created within 30 days!
On PieFed it looks like a still loading icon. At first I thought my account wasn’t “finished” or something!:-P
Welcome! We’ve been waiting for you!
