I remember just a few months ago bars and clubs being super packed and now there’s hardly anybody at them. What’s going on?
Edit: I’m in the Los Angeles area
Nobody has money to burn.
Or snort.
Or boof
More of a busket scoofer myself
I mean, I could go to a bar and get a $10 drink.
Or, I could have a whole-ass $11 bottle of wine, at home, in the quiet, with my dogs and a damn good book.
…Might help to mention what hemisphere you’re in, or continent you’re on? Or country? Or city?
The reason for your local change in nightlife could be anything from a wide, wide range of reasons, almost all of which depend heavily on where you are.
Let’s not be like the uncouth Defaultist Americans that assume everybody in the world lives where they do. Let’s be better, and let’s provide a location when it’s key info.
Obviously from the US because they think every human is from the US.
Americans legit think the internet ends at their borders. Even relatively modern places like Bluesky are so infuriating for not understanding how internet works.
Many, many years ago, Pizza Hut announced ordering pizza online if one of their restaurants is within a certain range. We checked, we were in range, and ordered our pizzas.
Guess what? No pizza. We sent a mail, and we got a totally confused answer. Yes, that offer was for US based orders only (no mentioning of this on the web site, we had checked!). How the heck could we have internet outside the US? Our answer, that the web was actually developed in Europe confused him even more.
We got the offer that they would send us the order free of charge once they expanded the service to our place. So far, no pizza, even though they offer this service for a few years now…
Bloody US Defaultism 😒
Sooooo fucking on point. If you arent a sports fan in my area you would be so curious of the same question depending on time of year or success of season. Super anecdotal but just 1 example of tons and tons of variables that effect the bar/restaurant/hospitality industry
Los Angeles area
Lmfao I was hoping so much it would be not only a major US city but one of the largest culturally.
Internet never lets me down
You’re welcome
Nailed it.
If you just looked at the replies you would think OP said they were on an expired visa in Los Angeles.
I get that the ICE situation is scary, but for most of the world, this isn’t a concern, the world economy however is always shifting and America is definitely on a downturn, as wages stagnate and prices skyrocket even before the full weight of the tariff nonsense hits. I don’t know about other countries, but the US is going to be just like every other developing nation with a vast swath of citizens living in shanties while a few dozen people hold ALL the money.
In many places, people are still going out and partying, but also in much of the world, the idea of “clubbing” isn’t nearly as popular and people tend to gather in streets and neighborhoods to celebrate and get drunk.
Trump economy. Enough said
Trump put a 100% tariff on fun.
More a tariff on life itself.
It’s bigger than one administration. Capitalism separates the majority of people from their wealth, which destroys their ability to go out to the club. All of that money you hear about that billionaires and even millionaires make is just the club money that you and I use to have. Now, instead of going to club, we sit in the dark and watch the ultrawealthy fly really high and call it space travel.
Everything that they have was taken from you and I.
thats why vegas/reno is also dead from what ive read on reddit(people are asking why it so dead). besides the tariffs/and detention of tourists which also is one primary reason. vegas is a failing city for quite a number of years already. losing out to ONLINE gaming, and sports isnt going to save the city if nobody is going there.
I’ve been reading this for the past 20 years online, and yet not a single fucking movement has done anything within my life to change this. And im sick of reading this, becuase so far no one wants to do anything about it.
You’re preaching to the choir here.
Ive been patiently waiting for anyone to make a plan. Ive been told to WAKE UP SHEEPLE many times, but never once given any clue on what to do once awake.
Wish I could go back to sleep for a bit tbh
I know. I’m also sad.
The economy was due for a recession. It just happened to be that Trump has done a lot of things to make it worse.
It’s a financial thing. There’s a K shaped economy, with no middle class, and the lower class dealt with inflation for a while with credit card debt… and… those credit cards are filled up.
Middle class is still working class.
Stop doing this… its people vs the ultra wealthy… unless your less than 100 people your all the fucking same… they want people to feel divided, we are not… its rich assholes who are so morrally corupt and evil vs the rest of us…
We really are just one agreement away from rolling these fuckers
I imagine there’s a lot less tourists since ICE started showing up in big numbers in LA. The presence of a large oppressice force also makes some question whether they want to go out or not, especially those close to the people who have been kidnapped.
not just ice, but border/custom detainment, requiring review of your phone of any anti-trump, anti-zionist material, which already deter tourist, plus canadians dont like trump constant messaging of invading thier country.
That’s true, international tourism is down across the country, not just domestic tourism.
I mean here in Canada why would I go to a bar and spend like $12 on a single pint of beer when I can go to the store and pay the same amount and get like 6 pints?
Back in my 20’s when I could go to the bar and pay $1.50 for a pint of PBR, sure it made sense. it was cheaper and i was with friends. I could get drunk on the cheap and have a good time.
now? there’s no point. Cheap Dive bars (the ones I used to frequent) are going the way of the buffalo and in my city there’s literally like only one left out of the dozens I used to go to all the time. I’m not paying over $10 for a single beer. Plus the patrons that still do go to bars are crap. they all would rather be on their phones then have a conversation at the bar.
so to sum up A. it’s more expensive and B. younger generations killed the vibe.
Down here in Pittsburgh I can still pay $2-4 for a beer, and smoke inside.
and smoke inside
Another reason bar and club scenes have died.
Can’t tell if you’re for or against it.
I don’t even smoke but I don’t mind it. Lets me know where the cheap dives are and the vibe is better.
When they made it illegal to smoke it pubs and clubs in the UK, it did a right number on that industry.
The first few months I was whining about government overreach. Since then I have come to realize what a true boon to humanity the ban really was.
Now I can’t even fathom how anyone in their right mind would think smoking inside is a reasonable thing to do.
Edit: also, yeah, people stopped going to bars and drinking after the ban?? LOOL
Do you live in a college town?
I walk past a couple bars a lot and they seem to have the same amount of people. All the outside tables had folks last night.
I’m not going to bars because I’m unemployed. Like I say, if capital wants me to spend money they can give me some, first.
Too fucking expensive.
And at least for me, I have little interest in alcohol-centric outings because transportation becomes an issue.
Fewer tourists from other nations would be a contributing factor. ICE in general may be more. Perhaps economy isn’t as great as our Fuhrer wants us to think.
Tourism would be a thing, yeah.
Who in their right minds would go visit the US, knowing full well you might end up in a torture prison for a year just because you wanted to have a week of fun in the US?
I was at a packed one last night for my friends that were DJing. I didn’t drink there though to save money
In addition to Summer Student Season, I hear there’s a lot of ICE pouring through LA this year.
You gotta watch out for that dangerous black ice, it’s transparent and sneaky
That black ice creeping into our neighborhoods, making the streets unsafe!
People just spent a few hundred dollars taking their families to watch the 2 biggest movies of the summer and now in 2 weeks the kids return to school and need supplies. Money is tight right now and priorities.
People just spent a few hundred dollars taking their families to watch the 2 biggest movies
Believable, this is why I pirate.
Amen
Let those who can pay, pay. For the rest of us, there’s creative social equalization. I consider it reverse tax on full fledged capitalist dystopia.
The issue is that Hollywood is the enemy and people shouldn’t be paying them even if they can.
Same thing with music owned by labels.
Deny the parasite profit
Which movies?
Minecraft and the Smurfs
How were they?
Minecraft was okay, haven’t seen the Smurfs
Blocky and blue.
Didn’t even know there was another Smurfs one.
Superman and Fantastic 4
Ah. Fair enough. The last big budget film I saw in theaters was endgame. During the late stage of it’s original run.
I think I saw a Neil Breen movie in one since.
im hearing these 2 arnt doing so well in the box office, despite the massive hype. FANTASTIC 4 seems like the 2015 one, lol.
a few hundred dollars takint their families to watch the 2 biggest movies of the summer
How big are these families? Partner, step daughter, and I recently went a three tickets, three drinks, and three snacks was less than fifty quid.
Quid… not sure what they charge for movies over there but here in the states it’s $50 per person for a full ride. Take a regular family with 2 adults and 2 kids, $50 each. That’s where I got the number.
bars and clubs run on disposable income.
The climbing gym is fucking packed though
that would be different from a BAR /club area, where people go to pickup other people.
Umm… Try again… There is entire culture around gym hook ups
